About this listen

Five years ago, Henry, Lord Glossup, was suspected of murdering his late wife. Although he was exonerated and the true murderer caught, Henry has been accused of murdering a lady again, in the same fashion. He appeals to Barnaby and Penelope for help, as does Stokes who, having been the inspector in charge of the previous case, is tasked with solving the current one. The investigators soon establish that the evidence implicating Henry is flimsy and circumstantial, and his alibi is easily verified. But that leaves them, along with the sister of the deceased, to unravel the tangled puzzle of who strangled Viola Huntingdon and was it the secret admirer she referred to only as “H”?

I was about to give up on this series as I couldn't bear the other narrator and was so pleased to hear Liam Gerrard was narrating this title. He really brings the characters to life and they aren't over the top like the other books. The plot is pretty predictable with the usual twists and turns one might expect in this series but it's a fun, fast paced yarn. More Barnaby Adair narrated by Gerrard please!!

Liam Gerrard's narration brings this to life!

Almost too easy read/ listen. Quite predictable. Even the supposed twists in the tale are predictable…all that said, if you need to relax, this will do it for you.

I have been listening to these “Cases” of Barnaby Adair, back to back, so I notice the differences in narration. With the exception of this title (and book 2, which are novellas 1a and 2a), all have been narrated by Napoleon Ryan. In My Opinion, he does far more distinctive voices than this current narrator!

Unfortunately, he makes ALL of the characters sound OLD! Penelope sounds like an old woman, all of the male characters are indistinguishable from each other and the overall tone is “grey”.

The story is complex and intriguing, but, overall I’m disappointed in the presentation. I probably may not have noticed these things if I’d had a year or two between each story, but I’m devouring them, literally one after the other. As I finish one, I move onto the next - it’s a continuous story for me - thus the change in narrator is harsh and worse. It makes the story heavy and all of the characters old.

Onto the next one…

Another Good Story
