About this listen

Baton. Light. Chocolate. Duck. This is not DS Adams' usual kit. This is not DS Adams' usual case. She doesn't think it's anyone's usual case, not with the vanishing children and the looming bridge and the hungry river. Not with the snap-snap-snap.

But six kids are missing, and she's not going to let there be a seventh. Not on her watch. And she knows how to handle human monsters, after all. How different can this really be? So: Baton. Light. Chocolate. And the bloody duck. Let's be having you, then.

We really did need to know why DI Adams relocated to Yorkshire, and this is a very satisfying explanation. I hope the author will give us more Adams, rubber ducks and all.

It's a pity that it meant a change of narrator - the excellent Patricia Gallimore had done such a fantastic job voicing the Toot Hansell WI, the dragons and all the other characters in the Beaufort Scales books - as this reader seems exceedingly ill-prepared. Strange inflections, emphases in the wrong places and straightforward mispronunciation of words makes listening quite hard work: it's only because I love Watt's writing that I persevered.

A great prequel!

BE WARNED, books listed as one two and three and wrong, two and three should be referred with the Leeds book last!!
Nice story, nothing too heavy, gentle fantasy, narration is ok too, sometimes does some odd lengthening of sentences as if to denote spooky when it's nothing, a bit off putting at times, but otherwise enjoyable.

Audible listed books in wrong order!!

This is the great start to the paranormal police genre. The narrator is perfect for the story. I recommend it.

Very good

Eventful, exciting and so adventurous that kept me captivated. I really loved it and can't wait to reading the next book.

Brilliant story, really enjoyable

It’s a good book but the narrator is quite jarring, speaking normally and then randomly pausing between words. ‘And she heard his back. Crack. From. Where. She. Sat.’ ‘She felt a headache. Right. Behind. One. Eye.’ Really random.

Narrator is a bit odd
