About this listen
Michael Morpurgo’s classic tale, capturing the power of the human spirit.
First published back in 1982, ‘War Horse’ has taken the world by storm. The book was adapted to the stage and was performed at the National Theatre and on Broadway. This full and unabridged edition is beautifully performed by the National Theatre’s first Albert, OIivier-award-winner Luke Treadaway.
At the outbreak of World War 1, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France.
He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to the trenches to find him and bring him home.

Would you consider the audio edition of War Horse to be better than the print version?
Yes, actually, I would. Being told the story in first person, from the point of view of the horse, Joey, made it grove well with a narrator. What other book might you compare War Horse to, and why?
It reminded me of The jungle books, because the story being told from the animals point of view. There is a great sense of charm and adventure in both books also. You don’t know where either story might take you.Which character – as performed by Luke Treadaway – was your favourite?
He gave a real sense of life and character to the horse. Luke Treadaway did a great job.If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I like the tag from the Stephen Spielberg film; Separated by War. Tested by Battle. Bound by Friendship.Any additional comments?
A truly brilliant listen. Through telling the story from the horse’s point of view, the author did not have to pick sides and showed that there were good people and bad people on either side. I think the horse is the perfect character for Children to emphasise with, as they could understand his struggles and the struggles of the characters he meets without getting caught up with the politics of the First World War.Charming Children’s Story.
