Summary

Read by Derek Jacobi and Michael Morpurgo

Set on a farm in rural Devon, this is a collection of Grandpa’s reminiscences and stories as told to his grandson. Grandpa’s nature and his touching relationship with the boy is evoked superbly by Michael Morpurgo’s writing.

This two-voice read brings the characters to life as the story of Grandpa’s ‘shame’ (the fact that he cannot read and write) unfolds.

Derek Jacobi is sensitive and compelling in the role of Grandpa, inspiring a true sense of achievement and triumph as he finally tells his own story in his own words.

Fordson

Good story but facts on Fordson wrong, which was disappointing as rest of story good.
A Fordson cant be towed.
Clutch and brake 1 pedal so never a concern with brakes.

Escape to the countryside...

Great story for those who have an interest in rural life and living by the rhythms of the land. Full of quaint morals like a tractor will never be as good a company as a horse but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it the same care and attention. Great listen with an elderly relative as the themes triggered lots of talking points. Only criticism is the triumphant music that interludes the three parts.

Farm boy

I am a little disappointed with this story having listened to some of his other books but I am sure his other book will come up to search.

Beautiful story

Derek Jacobi narrates brilliantly. Switching between accents remarkably well, he's such an excellent actor.
This book is a wonderful follow-up to War Horse, felt like a conclusion. Short and very sweet. Some folk are comparing it to War Horse, I think that's unfair. Each book has its own special qualities.
