Summary

Liberals worldwide invoke Scandinavia as a promised land of equality, while most conservatives fear it as a hotbed of liberty-threatening socialism. But the left and right can usually agree on one thing: that the Nordic system is impossible to replicate elsewhere. The US and UK are too big, or too individualistic, or too - something.

In Viking Economics - perhaps the most fun economics audiobook you've ever listened to - George Lakey dispels these myths. He explores the inner-workings of the Nordic economies that boast the world's happiest, most productive workers, and explains how, if we can enact some of the changes the Scandinavians fought for, surprisingly recently, we too can embrace equality in our economic policy.

Interesting comparison

This book paints a rather rosy picture of the Nordic countries, which I struggled with at first. But, then I realised that this might be how it is when compared to the American model. The author touches upon some of the problems in the Nordic countries, so at least its not presented as perfect. Even though it's not totally realistic, it does present a good picture of the model. It's just very simplified. The narrator however... I wouldn't have believed it was possible to mispronounce all non-English words that much unless it was deliberate! I'm Norwegian, and I was constantly distracted because I had to untangle the pronunciation to understand what he was talking about. I'm still not sure what the author's wife is called, though she is mentioned by name many times throughout! (But, next time I talk to Audun Lysbakken, I'm so gonna say his name like this narrator!)

Interesting ideas and great insight

A nice and simple way to see the economic comparisons of the Nordics and the USA, author sounds a little dated but did hold the story together well.

More of this!

Any additional comments?

I can't believe this book isn't bigger. If everyone would just listen and work together we'd have this situation on lockdown. So necessary right now. Thanks, Mr. Lakey!

Really enjoyed this!

What did you love best about Viking Economics:?

A very interesting look into the Nordic model of society. George Lakey breaks down Scandinavian countries in regard to health, income, and over all happiness and he makes a very convincing argument for why we should be taking notes. Wonderful audiobook!

basically socialism

The author spends less time advocating for the Viking economic model than in advocating for equality of access to social services. Not an economics guide but a decent enough narrative

well told and comprehensive

book offers a complete look into the development and current practices of Viking economics, and relates it to the issues facing the USA economy today. the narrator was very good and enjoyable to listen to. it astounds me to learn about these nordic countries bucking the trend and making social democracy work and thrive for so long, while other nations struggle with their current models.

We’ll researched book

I just returned from a Scandinavian tour. I would vouch for everything in this book. These countries are a league of their own. The harmony between nature and people is amazing. Adopting the socialist model was tarnished by similarities to communism and corruption. Freedom and equality are pillars in Scandinavia but I would add accountability are merits that built the Viking economy and way of life. Read “Jante’s Law” to learn more. I was surprised that the book didn’t refer to it
