Summary

Some stories can kill....

Italian director Nicolo Funelli's lost film comes alive when the maven of the macabre is released after 20 years of VHS imprisonment. New hire Annie Watkins' pre-emptive obituaries at Live @ Five New Orleans News seem to be killing off famous people. A used delivery van causes Katie and Gavin's life to take an unimaginable wrong turn into very dark territory. A teen orphan with a unique ability is held captive in a secret government lab, forced to submit to their whims. Vacationers become a grotesque part of the Easter festivities in a small English town.

Tune in, sit back, and turn up the terror with Video Nasties...16 dark tales and a television pilot script certain to keep you wide awake at night. But don't touch that dial...it just might kill you.

Excellent nasty stories

First time I have listened to this author and he is definitely on my radar now. Very good collection of short stories. Nothing too scary but all unique and all quite good. Most anthologies are 25% fantastic, 50% mediocre, and 25% terrible. This book definitely swung more towards the fantastic side. Narrator as always does a great job and really brings you into the stories.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Audible Niceness for Video Nasties

I had been wanting to get this book on audible for some time, but never got around to picking it up. Then I picked it up, and ended up sitting on it for almost a month and a half because life got in the way. I have to say that I am really glad that I finally was able to actually find the time to listen.

First of all, I love short stories. I really enjoy anthologies, and this is one hell of an anthology. It is a great collection of creepy tales that are really good. I don't say that all the time either. I am particular about my anthologies, either they work or they don't. Most are amixed bag of amazing and complete crap, and I have no problem calling it like I hear it. Here, the stories are all worthwhile, and I had a lot of fun listening to them. Mental and Cuttings were the highlights for me, but there were no rotten apples. Some I just really clicked with. Others I admired.

The one cohesive thing about this book is the incredible work by the ever impressive, Rick Gregory. He is an old hand at horror, and he applies his vocal skills in that area here in a fashion that is certain to both captivate you and terrify you. I have always enjoyed Gregory's style, and he fits in quite well with the horror genre. He really packs some meat onto the bones of the stories that the reads, and who doesn't need more flesh to rend when it comes to horror? The man is an absolute treasure to listen to.

This is one of the best short horror collections I have listened to in some time. The author certainly knows how to write, and the narrator can tell a story and bring it to life like no other. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. Getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Awesome Short Form Horror!

Horror is my favorite genre so it's no surprise that I loved 'Video Nasties.' These stories range from terrifying to totally campy and include much of what's in between. Often these collections are hit and miss, with some stories being excellent and some sub par. Not this collection! I enjoyed all of these short stories immensely and would recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys the horror genre.

Whoa!

So, this author has been on my wishlist for some time, and I believe this is the first book I've listened to by him. I really enjoyed the short stories in this collection. The creepiest, by far, was the one with the nictating (sp?) eyeballs. Squirm, maybe? My favorite was the titular story, Nasties. It had a real 80s vibe that I absolutely loved! The narrator did a great job, and except for a few words that sounded funny to my ears (which I'm not sure of the actual pronunciations) he totally sucked me into the stories.

not worth the credit..

Boring and confusing short stories with just a touch of gore in some. To be honest the writer should just added tons more gore because the rest was mediocre at best. Very disappointing. i kept hoping it would get better and didn't. I made it to the last story which carried the name of the book and thought well this has to be the best story and well.......nope.. Save your credit my friends as I'm going to try and get mine back.

Above Average Horror Collection

What did you love best about Video Nasties?

I enjoyed these stories for the most part, as the rating shows. The author’s characters, in particular, are well developed and believable.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Rick Gregory?

Probably not. The narration was alright, if a bit odd. It didn’t unduly detract from my enjoyment of the stories, but the narrator makes strange inflections and sometimes stops in the middle of sentences as if turning a page. The cadence was distracting at times. Accents are also non-existent. There is one story that takes place in England, and all the characters speak as though they’re in Canada. In particular, there’s one part where a line is delivered with a character, “rolling the ‘R’ in rose,” but the narrator did not perform that roll.

Any additional comments?

As I am very sensitive to this myself, and appreciate warnings, there are a few animal injuries and deaths in these stories. In some cases I just had to skip ahead 30-60 seconds, though in the very short story “Sanctuary,” and the longer, “Stray,” I had to skip to the next chapter. These stories aren’t particularly grotesque in description, but I have basically no tolerance for even fictional animal pain. Again, I enjoyed the book, I’m just very sensitive to that. I will say, let’s just all agree to stop putting dogs in books and movies.
