Summary

Her dream comes at the price of human souls.

Ylva has always wanted to become a Valkyrie, and now that she's enrolled in her first year at Afterlife Academy, she's getting her chance. But nothing is simple about bringing souls to Valhalla, and she soon finds herself embroiled in ancient rivalries and new friendships.

With more human souls in need of collection than ever before, Ylva and her classmates are about to get a crash course in death. Valkyrie 101 is book one of the Afterlife Academy: Valkyrie, an urban fantasy academy series with a lesbian romance.

The Afterlife Academy specializes in teaching paranormals how to help human souls pass onto the next phase, whether that's by guiding them gently, preparing them for rebirth, or cutting them loose with a scythe.

Part of becoming a Valkyrie includes learning how to:

  • Open the gates of Valhalla
  • Train your pet wolf
  • Harvest a soul
  • Earn wings
  • Die and come back from it

Hooked

I absolutely loved this audiobook. I’ve read a few academy books but this is my first Valkyrie book. Ylva wants to become a Valkyrie, make friends in high places and befriend a wolf. What she doesn’t expect is a quirky roommate, friends from other species and a connection to a wolf that could lead her down a path she can’t return from. There are some really interesting characters in this book. This is only the beginning but the chance at love, death and magic I’m hooked. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I also got a free copy of the Ebook via Amazon. This has an engaging narrator and I felt she could easily be Ylva. Awesome start to an academy series.

Outstanding

I just loved this book. It is such a good way to start a series. Aleksi has done an outstanding job on narrating this book and I cannot wait to listen to the rest of the series.

Captivating

I was so caught up in the story that I had to download the next one immediately. I love the characters and the story is so original. I really started to think about the afterlife and how this might work. Get imaginary. The narrator was very good as well. I just can’t wait to start the next book.

Good story!

The storyline was good, but did seem like one that would appeal to younger readers from high school to early college age. Kind of similar to the world of Harry Potter, it was more of a dark magical land. The narrator wasn't bad, but I would love to see more expression come from her voice.

Love It

I love Valkyries so I was quite excited to see Arizona Tape's academy book is all about Valkyries. I love the classes and learning about the veil and Valhalla. We head to The Afterlife Academy with Ylva and find her training to become an afterlife assistant is not quite what she was expecting. I love the side characters and seeing the difference in the Wind Children, Dragons, and Wood Elves. The budding friendship/relationship between Ylva and Ryoko is so sweet. Pickles the dust bunny is so adorable, I want one of my own. There's a lot packed into this quick read that left me eagerly awaiting more. I enjoyed the narration and how she brought the story and characters alive.

Good Beginning

Overall I found this to be an interesting and original storyline. I however did not connect with the main character. I found her obnoxious & judgemental. I was hoping she would learn acceptance and see the error of her ways ( and she may in future books) but she didn't in this one. The narrator was wonderful bringing the story and characters to life. I would give book 2 a chance since I did like the overall story

Great Character Growth!

So I will start of by saying this book was a hard start for me. The main character starts of as unlikable, simply with the fact that she is so judgmental, self absorbed and thinks less of all the other Afterlife Assistance and is offended an Elf was going to school to be a Valkyrie instead of a Reaper. I kept going hoping she will grow and I'm glad I did! She definitely starts to see things from a different perspective, she learns more from her roommate and as she learns more, she is also growing herself as a person and discovers new things about herself. I related to her so much in the self discovery, the confusion she has about what she's feeling, how she's feeling, who she is really and even what is her sexuality. This is a hot and cold for her because it is confusing at first because if you are taught all your life one way and feel different it makes you feel like you are broken or wrong. I was so devastated when the story ended because I wanted to keep going to see what is next, will she get clarity and what is happening to the world. I highly recommend this book and want the rest of the series ASAP!
