Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Summary
Author Chris Pike's debut novel Unexpected World is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds. Assistant District Attorney Dillon Stockdale is on the phone with his daughter when an EMP obliterates the entire electrical grid of the United States. Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on. Gripped with the terrifying realization the plane has crash-landed somewhere in the expansive and dangerous landscape of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Dillon sets out to rescue her before it's too late. A harrowing survival story with non-stop, pulse-pounding action, Unexpected World is a story of good vs. evil, of a complex narrative of fight or flight, and mind-bending choices resulting in profound consequences. Dillon Stockdale is determined, he's well-equipped, and nothing will stop him. Or will it?

Where are all the people?
Would you try another book written by Chris Pike or narrated by Kevin Pierce?
Not unless I can be guaranteed that there is a better story line and character development than this one.
Has Unexpected World put you off other books in this genre?
No - I read One Second After, so I know decent books can be written on this subject.
Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favourite?
They were all equally annoying. I didn't engage with any of them.
Do you think Unexpected World needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Not at these prices. If you are going to write a book try not to cheat your readers by splitting one rather thin story into a trilogy.
Any additional comments?
This is another book where ordinary people suddenly have extraordinary powers of stupidity. There is an EMP, but people seem to be able to move from place to place without suddenly meeting huge numbers of displaced people. You seem to have an unreal idea of just how much food and water you have to carry whilst looking for your daughter. Who has gone down in a plane crash, but you are able, without GPS, to go directly to the area of the crash site. You leave behind a safeish place, unprotected, and become an itinerant refugee armed only with your rugged good looks and a moral code. You go into the water with an alligator and manage both not to drown, or have anything worse than a few bruises. You have sex with a woman and then both of you act as if it didn't happen whilst still giving each other sidelong glance - please.
If I want fairy stories I read the Brothers Grimm.

Father WIll do Anything to Rescue His Daughter
A great story - fast moving with a lot of action right from the start. Fast paced about a single father talking on the phone to his daughter who is on a plane that is about to land. Plane crashes due to an emp and father is determined to go rescue her. He is in Texas and she is in Louisiana. Him, his dog and a female companion/attorney that he has also rescued start out determined to find her and start life all over again.
Story is too short but I enjoyed it and will get the next one. Didn't use a credit but paid for this since it was under 6 hrs not sorry I did but for the value I wish it was longer.

Great start to a series
Any additional comments?
Great start to a series. I really enjoyed this story. It pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go until the end. It was an entertaining, well written, interesting, engaging and enjoyable story. Definitely worth your time.
You never know where you will be when a disaster hits and your world changes.
When SHTF your child is hundreds of miles from home. What lengths would you go to in order to find your child. If your Dillon Stockdale you'll will do anything in your power to find your child.
Cassie Stockdale survived when plane she was on crashed. Has no idea where exactly she is or which direction to go in an effort to get help and eventually home. With little to no supplies, what's your next move?
The story does end in a cliffhanger. Fortunately the second book in the series is already available on Audible.
Kevin Pierce does a fantastic job with the narration. Great character voices. Clearly spoken. The narration flows smoothly at a nice even pace. He just has one of those voices that makes the characters and story come to life. I save his books for my road trips, listening to a story he narrates make me look forward to my weekly 9 hour trip.

More Drama than a Prepper Story
Story is about a father (Dillon) who is a rugged go-to type of guy. He is at work in the courthouse when an EMP is deployed over the United States. Dillon knows exactly what is happening when it does and has been stocking and keeping supplies at his home in case of this type of situation.
His only daughter (Cassie) was on an airplane during the attack. After saving a co-worker (Holly) and helping those that he can, he goes to his house and gears up to head out to the site he thinks the plane crashed. Holly understands how far they will be traveling and tries to show Dillon that she can handle the situation. He knows in his heart that his daughter survived, but also knows that without any type of power, electronics, etc., she cannot call him for help and he cannot be sure of her safety until he gets there.
Luckily his daughter has two other survivors (men) with her after the plane crash. One of which is a younger version of her dad, and possibly a love interest to her. Cassie and survivors head out of the swamp to find shelter, food and hopefully a way to get home to her dad.
During this first book of the series, it is mostly about both parties heading towards each other and the difficulties of traveling over a country full of people struggling to stay alive.
I took away one star as the story has some situations which seem glossed over. For instance one part of the story when Dillon and Holly go to his home (which is full of supplies) to pack up, they leave without giving any information or supplies to his neighbor (whom he interacts with in the story and is supposed to be friendly with).
Otherwise I did enjoy the story and look forward to the next book. There is a really bad guy in it that we don't see a lot of in the first book, the preview of the next book sounds like he will be a big part of it.
Kevin Pierce is one of my favorite narrators and did a great job with this. It's always a pleasure to hear his voice.

I loved this story.
This book was fast paced, had great characters, and had lots of actions. This is an EMP story that is suitable for younger audiences. The only bad thing was how short the book is, and it ends with things unresolved. The narrator did a great job also. But I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series! Solid start.
I thoroughly enjoyed this EMP survivour book! For such a shortish read, just about 5 and a half hours long, it packs a lot of plot and character development into it.
The plot was fast paced and engaging. Though that blasted ending annoyed me, I'll get to that in a minute!! Anyway, the book is about Dillon, whom, after an EMP attack, does all he can to reach his daughter. She was on a plane at the time of the attack and her plane went down in a bog. He believes in his heart that she is alive and, along with his co-worker, Holly, and a dog, he travels cross country to try to find Cassie. What follows is his struggle to cross a country gone mad with very little supplies and in time to save his daughter.
Character wise, all were well written and developed. I really admired Dillon and his determination to reach his daughter no matter what. He was resourceful, determined, capable and brave. He is somewhat prepared for an event like this, yet he isn't one of those extreme preppers.
Now onto the ending! *Sigh*, I hate cliffhanger endings, yet I tolerate them as I can understand that an author wants to keep the readers hooked, but I can't tolerate books that just end, not with a cliffhanger, but just ends. Seriously.... you will leave the ending like that!! Ugh. There were other ways to ending it without ending it so abruptly.
What else can I say about Kevin Pierce that haven't been said a thousand times!! He really does a story like this justice and always does a great job narrating any story he tells. I always enjoy his narration and ways recommend his work.
I received a free copy of this but voluntarily reviewed it. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.
