About this listen

Waylock had been granted eternal life - but now he was killing on borrowed time.

Gavin Waylock had waited seven years for the scandal surrounding his former immortal self to be forgotten and had kept his identity concealed so that he could once again join the ranks of those who lived forever. He had been exceedingly careful about hiding his past. Then he met the Jacynth. She was a beautiful 19-year-old, and Gavin wanted her. But he recognized that a wisdom far beyond her years marked her as one who knew too much about him to live. As far as she was concerned, death was a mere inconvenience. But once the Jacynth came back, Gavin Waylock's life would be an everlasting hell.

for a book written so long ago, it is amazingly pertinent and shows great insight on behalf of the author. very much enjoyed the author's picture of future tech too. great story and well ended

Great story and not dated considering it was written in 1956, amazingly before I was born. Great performance by the narrator though some words were pronounced in a strange way. I am a big fan of JV, I have noticed a set of his books appearing and I am really going to enjoy listening to them. Thank you whoever has set them to audiobooks.

PS. I have an original edition of this book, signed :-) great story.

PPS Towards the end of the story a spaceship is introduced which is going on a journey of discovery, called the 'Starship Enterprise' :-)

One of my favourite books

A classic by a master storyteller. Vance's writing never fails to grab you at the outset and draw you into a strange world created by a fantastic imagination. I read this book years ago and had forgotten it. I really enjoyed the Audiobook reading on this occasion.

Enjoyed enormously.

A curious little tale that is slow burner, but well worth the effort.

The narration is spot on, sounding much like the voice of a medieval jester, perfectly framing the story and oddly giving it some context. To Live Forever draws upon the motivations of human experience, and how these might change both individually and societally if not constrained by the imperative of death. For me, it is a useful allegory of Christianity and more generally embodies the vagaries of contemporary religion, specifically, how does any social order persist without control, and how does a ruling caste maintain order if they are not perceived to represent the pinnacle of the mountain to which their restless subjects aspire? Particularly if the dead prophet returns to tell a rather different story to that of the prevailing dogma?

Big questions.

Read it for yourself and decide.

A mischievous tale of intrigue and deception

An enjoyable sci Fi with an interesting premise, obviously though it was a product of its tome so not as thought provoking as it was when written
