About this listen

One winter's afternoon, Sonia, 43, married and respectable, answers the door to 15-year-old Jez. He’s come to borrow some music. Sonia invites him in and soon decides that she isn't going to let him leave. As Sonia's desire to keep Jez hidden and protected from the outside world becomes all the more overpowering, she is haunted by memories of an intense teenage relationship, which gradually reveal a terrifying truth.

The River House, Sonia's home since childhood, holds secrets within its walls. And outside, on the shores of the Thames, new ones are coming in on the tide...

Great book. This felt just so English and read with just the right accent. Compelling storyline, keeping heightened interest right up to the end. So enjoyed the read that recommended it to my Mum too.

Very enjoyable read

This audio book is quite good but I must admit I prefer thrillers with a little more pace, the narration and the action are very drawn out - it almost makes me want to drift off to sleep. Yet the story isn't boring and if you stick with it the pressure builds nicely.

The main character, Sonia, holds local 15-year-old boy Jez prisoner as she builds her obsession with him - or rather she believes him to be very like Seb, someone from her past. Sonia is obviously having some sort of psychotic break due to the shadowy events of her teenage years - which are slowly revealed through the book.

Overall this is a good story, far from terrible but not heart poundingly great either. Unlike the other reviewer I wasn't crazy about the narration, it felt too sleepy, but it wasn't bad. Listen to a sample first to decide is the voice is right for you.

Great story, brilliantly narrated, The main character of Sonia will stay with me for a long time.

Spooky

I think the people who have given this a lower rating due to subject matter are the type of readers who would never like to read about 'distasteful ' subjects. I , however, appreciate the realism within this book and the slow breakdown of the mind. It does cover rather grim topics but then the world can be a grim place. Beautifully read by Charlotte Strevens as usual- I just love her silky seductive voice and she always captures the mood of a novel perfectly.

Gripping, grin and fascinating

Loved this. Live in Greenwich and an accurate portrayal of it. Really good story, unexpected twists and interesting characters. Recommended by a friend and I’d recommend myself.
