Summary
There Is No Wall is ultrarunner Allie Bailey's brutally honest and sometimes shocking account of alcoholism, depression and severe mental breakdowns which almost cost her her life.
Told with disarming vulnerability, heartbreaking depth of feeling and dark humour, this isn't a story about how running saved her–she was already running and at the height of her struggles sometimes even winning 100-mile-plus races. But somewhere between the darkest excesses of the music industry and the simple beauty of the ultrarunning scene, Allie found space to listen, learn and put into practice techniques that would go on to save her life and change it for the better.
There Is No Wall is a story about how doing something you love can lead you to achieve things you never thought possible. Running won't save you, but it might buy you the time to save yourself.

Exceptional story!
This book has etched itself on my heart, my running and my book shelf. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible story! It has taught me more than you’ll ever know - about being a parent to an impressionable child, about running and about alcohol. Thank you ❤️

Raw, brutal and beautifully honest.
I’d not heard of Allie before reading this book (sorry), I saw an endorsement by Ultradamo and thought I should have a listen. Wow, it’s a rollercoaster, I am in awe of Allie’s honestly and the raw emotion that she has put into this book. The desperation in many parts of the book was palpable, but the resilience to keep going and push through is inspiring, not to mention the amazing adventures and ultra running feats!
Your descriptions of alcohol and its place in society are spot on and I applaud you for calling it out for what it is. This is a great book, the narration by Allie is spot on. I throughly recommend it, it’s a tough listen in places but that makes it all the more valuable.
Thank you Allie for sharing your personal journey and most intimate thoughts, your honestly is inspiring.

A relatable listen
A great listen that packs a punch! Relatable and honest….As honest as you can get I believe! Binged in a couple of days. Thought it would be all about running but gave so much more.

Probably the best audiobook I’ve listened to.
I listened to the audiobook in full yesterday: long hike when up at my daughter’s in Leicestershire and drive back.
It’s excellent.
Brutally honest, deep - probably the best audiobook I’ve listened to.

A raw, honest and very important book.
I devoured this book over two days and I feel like I want to start it all over again. Apart from being it being interesting and engaging it was also really helpful which I wasn’t expecting. I thought it would be mainly about running but it is soooo much more! I’m so pleased I listened to the book on Audible, hearing it in Allie’s words made it feel even more special and a hundred more times emotional.

Absolutely listen to this book!
This is without doubt the best running-related/mental illness memoir I have read. And I’ve read a heap! It’s so refreshing, so relatable. You should absolutely give it a listen!

I was just gripped from the start
I have run 5 (very tame) ultras and a fair few marathons, but haven’t done much recently and am trying to improve my physical and mental running stamina after a bit of de-conditioning. I came across this audiobook by chance. I have binge listened in a day, some of which was during a run and a cool down walk, the rest while totally ignoring my family! I haven’t experienced issues with alcohol or depression but I could still relate to so much of what was said and apply it to my own story. It’s been incredibly motivating and inspiring and I think any runner or anyone who has experienced MH challenges would benefit from reading/listening.

It's simply Allie, having a fank and honest chat and it's epic.
I don't know what I was expecting when I picked up this book, but I knew that whatever it was, it'd be raw, honest, funny and, quite simply, Allie.
Allies unflinchingly honest always, and it's not because she's mean, it's because the truth is that we all need. She uses her experience and puts herself out there in the hopes it'll help someone. And it does. It already has. I cried and laughed through this one, and most importantly I heard what I needed to hear that re-affirmed to me the things I've been learning about myself recently.
That it's okay to ask for help, it's okay to need to make adjustments and that we never stop moving forward.
Running won't save you, but it's a wonderful tool. Replace running with any 'positive' hobby you use to outrun life, and this still applies. It's not a self-help book, but it's one that gets you thinking about how to help yourself.
And if none of that grabs you? It's still a brilliant read. I haven't stopped recommending it since I started it, I won't stop either.
