Summary

Jimmy McGuire, a washed-up comic, is found dead on the streets of Inverness, his body garroted.

Back in the 1990s, McGuire had been half of a promising double act until his partner, Jack Dingwall, was convicted of rape. Soon, a second corpse is found in an abandoned industrial site on the edge of the Moray Firth. The body has been there for some days and has also been garroted. The victim turns out to be a former musician turned record producer who had also been the subject of rape allegations.

Meanwhile, DI Alec McKay and DCI Helena Grant are still wrestling with the fallout from one of their recent cases following an acquittal. As the body count rises, the police think they have the killer in their sights. But McKay is concerned that the evidence is too neat, so when he realises there will be a final victim, he fears that time is running out....

Revenge by eradication - not a stand alone story!

As unfamiliar with the first book in the series, Candles and Roses due to it's poor reviews re writing, editing & the audio-books appalling narration, was at a disadvantage from the very start of listening to Their Final Act.
McKay & the team face multiple investigations as one garrotting is followed by another, and another and another. Looking for links other than just the method, entertainment industry, convictions for &/or rumours of exploitation/rape seem the key, then DNA at one crime scene links it to an old murder suspect who escaped justice.
Meanwhile, told in a separate thread, three young women from a Woman's Refuge are sent to a farm, run by a former country/pop musician/star, where the 'helping them' set up seems too good to be true, it is.
The concluding motive, the need to eradicate the network of perpetrators links to the Candles & Roses killings, so again left to some degree on the back foot of an otherwise good, well told story.
Excellent narration again by David McCallion.

humour

I have to admit that despite the gruesome murders it's the humour that really appeals to me. same narrator as next book but somehow better read.

The twists and turns of the plot. The characters were likeable and realistic.

The only criticism I have was that the story would have been improved by being a little shorter. Too much padding out. Otherwise it was most enjoyable

Depth of plot.

Really good narration overall. Only slightly less successful was the English female voice, but I’ll forgive that as the rest of it was so good!

Easy listening and great characters

Really enjoyed this, I’ve listened to a few by the same author (as they are currently in the plus catalogue) and it is easy to warm to the characters, the narration is great too.

Fantastic!

Another fantastic story from Alex Walter’s. I love a book that has me intrigued from start to finish, and so far, all of them have. Fabulous story, characters and superb narration. This series is a highly recommended listen.

Great Characters and plot

Best of his novels so far. Excellent Scottish performance and really fine plot crafting. Really enjoyed this book. Working my way thru Alex Slaters novels. So far none have disappointed me
