Summary
Isak is a white-eye, feared and despised in equal measure. Trapped in a life of poverty, hated and abused by his father, Isak dreams of escape, but when his chance comes, it isn't to a place in the army as he'd expected. Instead, the Gods have marked him out as heir-elect to the brooding Lord Bahl, the Lord of the Fahlan.
Lord Bahl is also a white-eye, a genetic rarity that produces men stronger, more savage and more charismatic than their normal counterparts. Their magnetic charm and brute strength both inspires and oppresses others. Now is the time for revenge, and the forging of empires. With mounting envy and malice the men who would themselves be kings watch Isak, chosen by Gods as flawed as the humans who serve them, as he is shaped and moulded to fulfil the prophecies that are encircling him like scavenger birds. The various factions jostle for the upper hand, and that means violence, but the Gods have been silent too long and that violence is about to spill over and paint the world the colour of spilled blood and guts and pain and anguish...
This audio edition is read by David Rintoul. David Rintoul has played leading parts with most of the major British theatre companies. Many television appearances include Darcy in the first BBC Pride and Prejudice. He frequently appears on radio and has recorded over 100 audiobooks. At the time of recording he was playing Dr Jake Houseman in the original London cast of the smash-hit musical Dirty Dancing.

a good book
I really enjoyed this book, haven't heard of it before but thought id give it a go, really in depth story and a good bit of humor which makes a nice change, just found it difficult to keep track of all the characters, there are alot of them that dip in and out the story, trying to remember where each fit in became a bit confusing. besides that its a fantastic story well worth a listen, and the narration is top class.

An amazing book with a narrator of such skill you end up in the land with Isak.

Refreshingly brilliant!

Just love flawed characters :)
This was a reread, I read this book two years ago loved it, got the other books in the series as well and never got round to read them.
I very much enjoyed how David Rintoul brought the characters to live and I got very quickly engaged in the story.
I still think that this is a fabulous fantasy story which is very difficult to put down, once you got caught up in the storyline. Lloyd is an eloquent story teller who managed to create a dark, vivid and enthralling world with fascinating characters and creatures - known and unknown :) - in it, which made the story a very engaging read.
When I read it the first time the story exceeded my expectations by far and I was not dissapointed, this still holds now. I very much enjoyed the idea of the "white eyes" which are stronger, bigger, more violent and definately meaner than "ordinary humans". These "white eyes" were created by the gods to rule the lands and the people. The characters in the story are depicted in great detail and well developed which resulted in a bunch of characters with strong personalities. The main character the "white eye" Isak is a fascinating personality with a lot of flaws and fears and that's excactly what I like so much about the story. He is made into a hero against his will - and at a very young age - who actually fears all kind of things, suffers from uncertanties and on top of that has a violent temper which he finds difficult to control at times.
Compared to a lot of the "shining - we know it all" heros, Isak is just refreshing and entertaining. His complex nature made him a very intriguing and charismatic character.
The action in the book was well paced, politics were complex at times but by no means overpowering the story. The magic was interesting, nothing to fancy and it was easy to follow the story line.
Tom Lloyed managed to create a vivid world, with great characters, a rich history, with a sense for descriptive details and originality. Again, I very much enjoyed this book and can recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy.

live in Twilight
I first read this book about 12 years ago, randomly finding it in chapters bookstore sometime after it was released and listening to it on audible now the same thing strikes me, if this had been properly marketed and promoted, it would stand today seen as one of the greatest fantasy series ever written.

Why only the first book on Audible?
Probably the most stand out fantasy I've read.
Such an amazing series of books that deliver all, even considering that it's not a happy story.
Dark, chilling and a lesson for any human..

Book 1 of a Fantastic new series
I read, and of course listen to, a lot of Fantasy and am not easily impressed but my imagination was captured by not only the writing but the characters that are introduced in this novel. So often good ideas are let down by the poor depiction of the indiviiduals and there interaction in the storyline but not here. The book is also enhanced by the narration of David Rintoul who imbues each person with there own feelings and personality. I am really looking forward to Book 2 of the series. A cracking read.
