Summary

From USA Today best seller and Audie nominee for Best Fantasy Novel Edward W. Robertson comes the hotly anticipated spin-off from the Cycle of Galand universe.

Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill.

Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

But the Lannovians may have just discovered a way.

As the meet unfolds, the Order's day of joy turns into a massacre. Cally and a grim soldier named Rowe are the only two to make it out of the ambush alive. As they flee into the wilds, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to destroy everything Cally holds dear - but in order to stop it, he may have to betray every one of the Order's beliefs.

Good cycle but issues with the audio

Good storyline along with Galand
I had issues with the audio. Tim Reynolds is a great read but the recording quality would go from studio professional to sounding like he took a coffee break and read from the kitchen. I even deleted and reloaded with no change. That’s my only complaint and reason for 2 stars on performance

Terrible Production

Save your credit and pass on this book.

Robertson’s cycle series is one of my favorites, and Reynolds is one of my favorite readers.

The production/sound engineering of this book is horrible. The soul quality and volume fluctuates wildly throughout the book. It’s like two different people are reading, and at times they’re switching between who will read which sentence.

Highly disappointed.

Poor production quality

While the story and performance are at the high level I have come to expect from the author and performer, the end product has serious deficiencies in production. Sudden switches make reworked sections obvious from separate recording sessions. They sound as if recorded in different studios with different equipment by different engineers, and then were spliced in with no effort to adjust to match.

Cally's Backstory - Early Years

Before there were Dante and Blays there were Cally and Rowe and this is their story.

Edward W. Robertson and Tim Gerard Reynolds team up again to create and perform a delightful coming-of-age tale of some sorcerers and the evil they are capable of along with the virtuous and honorable ones who stand against them.

I dropped it one star due to the audio editing that occurred during the narration where Tim Gerard Reynolds' voice changed tone and pitch for a phrase or two which seemed like they were last minute insertions made due to last minute novel updates. These were nothing major but came off as a bit non-polished.

I enjoyed this so much!

I didn't realise I wanted this, but after reading it even a little, it was perfect. I hope we get a really good series as I think this has a great potential!

Prequels!

I hadn't expected this to be how the story unfolded. I am pleasently surprised with the fresh touch to the series/world created by Edward Robertson.
Big fan Ed! :) thanks.

Good book, but the audio mix needs work

Good story. But there are obvious issues with the audio mix. You can easily tell the edits in many places.

Good book, just not amazing

As far as this book goes it’s not bad. Certain parts seem to be a bit forced and strange. The MC seems to be completely fearless at times and totally scared in others, it’s strange.

I liked the story for the most part, I wish the magic part was explained a little more, but not bad over all

audio mastering needs attention, story good though

several times the volumes and pitches change when a reread section was added. Tim did a fantastic job reading and the story was amazing though.
