Summary

From USA Today best seller and Audie nominee for Best Fantasy Novel Edward W. Robertson comes the hotly anticipated spin-off from the Cycle of Galand universe.

Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill.

Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

But the Lannovians may have just discovered a way.

As the meet unfolds, the Order's day of joy turns into a massacre. Cally and a grim soldier named Rowe are the only two to make it out of the ambush alive. As they flee into the wilds, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to destroy everything Cally holds dear - but in order to stop it, he may have to betray every one of the Order's beliefs.

Editing was terrible

The editing was absolutely shocking, voice tone and quality CONSTANTLY changing at random. But the story and narration are excellent as always.

will update but sound is mad

I will definitely update this but I just had to comment on how bad the mixing is...its absolutely horrible its like he made a bunch of mistakes and recorded the corrections on his old phone in a closet full of wool coats and then somehow copy and pasted over the mistakes in Microsoft paint LOOL it's so jarring

Terrible Production

Save your credit and pass on this book. Robertson’s cycle series is one of my favorites, and Reynolds is one of my favorite readers. The production/sound engineering of this book is horrible. The soul quality and volume fluctuates wildly throughout the book. It’s like two different people are reading, and at times they’re switching between who will read which sentence. Highly disappointed.

Good cycle but issues with the audio

Good storyline along with Galand I had issues with the audio. Tim Reynolds is a great read but the recording quality would go from studio professional to sounding like he took a coffee break and read from the kitchen. I even deleted and reloaded with no change. That’s my only complaint and reason for 2 stars on performance

Horrible production

I was really happy when I found this book so I bought it without hesitation. Unfortunately, the sound quality is horrendous. This is very distracting. I am still at the beginning of the story and I am contemplating the option of leaving the book aside for a while in the hope that “they” will fix this soon... the question is: how long will it take? I hope not too long. Please correct that wrong.

Weird Audio and Hard Reset of Power

Tim Reynolds does a great job as ever, but for some reason there are times where it’s very obvious they cut different audio of the reading in. It can be jarring. I understand this is another origin story, but after Dante, it’s hard going back to a cold reboot of all skills and power the nether can do. Callie seems even clumsier and not as interesting as a result.

Remaster this NOW!

The story is great. Robertson again seamlessly deposits us into a familiar world complete with a well-developed system of magic and myth. Tim Gerald Reynolds delivers another great vocal performance. The technical recording, however, is horrible. It needs to go back to the studio for remastering right away.

Terrible production quality

I love all of the preceeding Cycle books, having listened to all of them a half dozen times. Tim Gerard Reynolds is brilliant as always - his Cally performance is a perfect match with the character. I was so excited to have a Cally perspective prequel! But this recording - the sound editing - is awful. Really, really, really, really bad! I couldn't get past chapter 3 (which is actually chapter 2). The splices where pick up lines were inserted are no less than 4 volume notches louder and sound tinnier, presumably because it was recorded in a different studio or with different sound equipment, than the rest of the production. It is jarring and wholly distracting. I stopped the book and removed it from my device after the FOURTH such occurrence in chapter 3. It would have been better to just re-record the whole chapter than to just splice one sentence every five lines. I can't believe they went live with this as is - it isn't like it was easy to miss. I hope they remaster this soon and replace all purchases.

Great book, terrible recording mix

The audio was obviously mixed in different rooms, with different mics and /or different engineers. The sound quality changes noticeably throughout the book and it made it very distracting. It was so bad that although the story was great and the voice actor was great it kind of ruined the audiobook.

Horrible production/ Great story

The story was great but there were many times I had to take a break. This was due to the horrible production! The variations in the spliced recordings was frustrating.

Poor production quality

While the story and performance are at the high level I have come to expect from the author and performer, the end product has serious deficiencies in production. Sudden switches make reworked sections obvious from separate recording sessions. They sound as if recorded in different studios with different equipment by different engineers, and then were spliced in with no effort to adjust to match.

Lots of re-records

Love Tim and the books, but the books had a crap ton of very noticeable re-records, or dubbing. Should have been completely redone because it was so distracting. Lower stars on performance, but everything else was great!
