Great legal drama

Summary
When Mickey Haller is invited by the Los Angeles County District Attorney to prosecute a case for him, he knows something strange is going on.
Mickey's a defense lawyer, one of the best in the business, and to switch sides like this would be akin to asking a fox to guard the hen-house. But the high-profile case of Jason Jessup, a convicted child-killer who spent almost 25 years on death row before DNA evidence freed him, is an intriguing one - particularly since the DA's determination to re-charge and re-try him for the same crime, seems doomed to failure.
Eager for the publicity and drawn to the challenge, Mickey takes the case, with Detective Harry Bosch on board as his lead investigator.

Courtroom drama and detective story
Two characters Michael Connelly's developed over several titles - Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch - both sign up for what seems like an impossible prosecution. A courtroom drama and a detective story unfold, with both players living up to their illustrious pasts. As a Bosch fan, I was pleased to see old Harry back and the whole thing unfolded in a gripping way that had me on the edge of my seat. Every spare moment, I was sticking my earbuds in and catching up on the next steps in the tale. There wasn't any great last minute revelation or theatrical finale to build up to like a crescendo, but it didn't feel any less enthralling despite that. A great listen.

From a Connelly lover
This is as always a great listen. If you liked The Lincoln lawyer, you will like this one. But you must also love/like very, very detailed court room dramas. Event hough Bosh is a big part of the story, it is a bit slow at times.

Good thriller but not Michael Connelly's best
I have read all of Michael Connelly's books. They are of a consistently high standard and always very enthralling and enjoyable. But this is not one of his best.
I find the split first/third person narrative depending on whether Haller or Bosch is on stage, as it were, rather uneven; and this made for a rather disjointed plot too. I like both the main characters, but I do hope that Connelly doesn't keep putting them in the same story as they each are better on their own. Not helped by Peter Giles rather macho style of narration.
That said this is still pretty good. And I am happy to recommend it particularly to Michael Connelly fans.

This is a great book with 2 of Michael Connelly's best characters. A page turner right from the start, I just had to keep listening until the end.
If you like Michael C's books then get this one and you won't be disappointed as puts you straight back into Harry's world, and the narration is great as well.

A new direction for Haller - but not a classic
I have enjoyed Connelly's previous Mickey Haller novels but this book was a bit of a let down. Haller agrees to become a prosecutor and brings in Harry Bosch to help him investigate. It sounds like a promising idea but all the things I love about Haller were lost as a prosecutor. There was none of the entertaining meetings between Haller and his client as we try to work out their guilt or innocence. Instead this was a long and rather tedious trial, followed by an improbable and rushed ending that left questions unanswered. It was almost as if Connelly ran out of steam.
Also, although I love Harry Bosch there was far too much of him in this novel and far too little of Mickey. The swapping of chapters between Harry and Mickey was a little confusing at times, and am I the only one who finds Maggie 'McFearce' a little trying?
I am hoping for a return to form in the next book in the series.

True Connelly story line and really enjoyed the narration and the way the story developed. The end was a bit "over before you know it" and thought it could have been a bit better but as always I really enjoyed it and will be looking out and purchasing the next Connelly book when available

Best yet
To my mind this is Conelly's best yet. Great to see Micky & Harry finally working together and the use of the 1st & 3rd person to illustrate if the part of the story is from either characters view point is really helpful.
Really moves at a pace. Fear and dread for the main characters nearest and dearest is never far away. The last few pages, as it all get wrapped up and the twisted ending is revealed is masterful, leaving you with a real sense of what you imagine, after all is said and done, the main characters are left with.
If you get no other detective novel this year, get this one!

Good book. Occasional first person narrator confusion.
Another good Haller and Bosch amalgamation. Really good idea for Haller to cross over to the prosecution side. Only very slight criticism I had, and possibly due to the fact I tend to listen when walking my dog Bruno, is that occasionally the first person narrator became Bosch and because their personal curcumstances were simlar, ie single parent, daughters etc, it wasn’t always clear if Bosch or Haller. I prefer one story teller talking in third person regarding other characters.
But enjoyed the book.
