About this listen

The Railway Detective faces his most dangerous adversary yet. It is 1852, and Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant Sergeant Victor Leeming are faced with their most complex and difficult case to date. As a train speeds over the Sankey Viaduct, a man is hurled from a carriage and plummets into the canal below. It later transpires that he has been stabbed to death. With no papers by which to identify the man, the detectives' investigation is hampered from the start.

Suspecting that the victim may have come from continental Europe, Colbeck and Leeming take the case to France where a new railway is being built by a British contractor. But in a new country the detectives face new problems. Anti-British feeling is rife and Colbeck and Leeming must put their own lives in danger to pick up the murderer's trail....

I read a few now ( not in chronological order) and have always enjoyed them. They have a very different style to most of my books. It’s simplistic and it’s good to have a change now and then - the literary equivalent of resting eyes on a calm colour. I can only think this was in the hands of a different editor. The foul language of the Irish navvies brought the whole story down with it’s liberal use. I don’t know whether it’s historically accurate or not but it completely jarred with the tones of the rest of the story and simply spoiled it all. Such a shame.

Not the Railway Detective’s finest tale.

I enjoyed the story but was very disappointed at the very foul language and obscenities put in the mouths of the "navvies". This filled a quarter to half of the story. It wasn't necessary- it could have been implied. I wanted to return the book but as I had already heard much of the story I didn't think that it would accept the return.

The previous books hadn't had such awful language and were very enjoyable. I hope that subsequent books won't either.

Disappointed with the bad language
