About this listen
The First Inspector Ghote Mystery.
It is just Inspector Ghote’s bad luck to be landed with solving a seemingly perfect murder at the very start of his career with the Bombay police. For in this baffling crime there is no corpse….
But he also has the cunning tycoon Lala Varde to contend with and the mysterious theft of one rupee from the desk of the Minister of Police Affairs and the Arts.

Overall, there just isn't much of a story. It is pleasant enough to listen to, but the plot is thin and I suppose demonstrates how crime writing has moved on in recent years. It is true, the Indian setting provides some novelty value, but the 'detection' springs from nowhere akin to Agatha Christie. Like Christie, the scenery is nice and the characters fun, but at the end of it, you know that it was much more froth than substance.
Ordinary story with little suspense

I enjoy this story as much as a Dorothy L Sayers or Agatha Christie and they are much in the same mould. I very much hope that Audible may put a free chapter or a spotlight on H R F Keating so as to publicise the entire series.
Will be buying more in the series as soon as I can.
