The body of a young man fished out of the Thames is of little interest to Londoners caught up in the excitement of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Yet to Inspector Sam Blackstone, the case is as puzzling as any he has ever come across. Why should a corpse dressed in the rags of a commoner have the face of a gentleman? And if this man does belong to noble stock, why has no one come forward to claim the body?

Story
The first audiobook which appeared in Georges Simenon's famous Maigret series, in a gripping new translation by David Bellos.Inevitably Maigret was a hostile presence in the Majestic. He constituted a kind of foreign body that the hotel's atmosphere could not assimilate. Not that he looked like a cartoon policeman. He didn't have a moustache and he didn't wear heavy boots. His clothes were well cut and made of fairly light worsted. He shaved every day and looked after his hands. But his frame was proletarian. He was a big, bony man.

Great story and narration, but sack the editor!
Have you listened to any of Sam Dastor’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes, he's a good narrator. This is not one of my favourites, but it's OK.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it's very long. It was good to listen to it over a couple of days while doing housework though.
Any additional comments?
It would help if someone had listened through to this before publishing it. There is at least one place where the narrator stutters, stops, tuts and repeats himself. I suppose it lent a realistic air to the narration - as though it were really being read to you by someone in the room - but a conscientious editor would have noticed and sorted it out.

Excellent!
Love this series of detective novels set in India. The story moves along at a fast pace in the colourful setting of India. From start to finish it is a page turner! Hope the author adds to Detective Ghote’s life!
The wonderful Reader brings the novel to life with his vocal tone which is easy on the ears! Amazed at his ability to do all the accents, add drama to these voices therefore bring the story to life in a very real way! Well done, your a Master of this Art!

A long-time fan of Inspector Ghote
Would you consider the audio edition of Inspector Ghote Caught in Meshes to be better than the print version?
I couldn't say. I never "read" books; I listen only.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not exactly, but I didn't feel like quitting either.
What about Sam Dastor’s performance did you like?
I love Sam's narration. I even searched for him and have listened to other Authors, that he narrates. He is a perfect example of how a Narrator brings a book to life. Sam's ability to switch smoothly between India accents and English, is excellent! It is the same with Lissette Lecat. Her narration of the "Number 1 Lady's Detective Agency" series, and her familiarity with the Botswana accent, is amazing. If you are not listening to Audio, you are missing out! :))
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No... this is one of Keating's last, and, although still a very good book, it isn't his best.
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend all of the Ghote books, on Audio!!!!!
