Two sisters have always stood together. Now, they're the only ones left.

In the shadow of Mount Hood in the US Pacific Northwest, sixteen-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie.

The girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams.

From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar. But the noise only gets worse . . .

Critic reviews

A really entertaining thriller . . . like Michael Crichton (who might have written something very like this), Patterson and Barker keep ratcheting up the suspense and the sense of impending doom, until, by the end, we wish we could read faster just so we can find out what happens next.
Patterson knows where our deepest fears are buried... there's no stopping his imagination. (NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW)
No one gets this big without natural storytelling talent - which is what Jim has, in spades. (LEE CHILD, bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series)
Patterson boils a scene down to a single, telling detail, the element that defines a character or moves a plot along. It's what fires off the movie projector in the reader's mind. (MICHAEL CONNELLY)
James Patterson is the boss. End of. (IAN RANKIN)
James Patterson is the gold standard by which all others are judged. (STEVE BERRY, bestselling author of the Colton Malone series)
Patterson is in a class by himself. (VANITY FAIR)

I'm not normally a fan of audiobooks with music or acted scenes but with this book it really worked.

The storyline is very good - even if some of the characters' actions are far-fetched - and keeps a good pace.

Overall, an entertaining listen.

The actors and diction so deep but absorbing book

The noise today

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Extraordinary divergence for this normally prolific crime writer. Instead an incredulous story which is gripping from first page to last.

One of his best
