Summary
Detective Sarah Noble investigates a dark case in the town of Slayton.
It began with the whispers.
In the woods, in the park, and always at night. Then they came into town, down dark alleys, and in the shadows. Before long there was a knock on the door.
When the couple were found dead with their faces frozen in horror, the black-eyed children were nowhere to be seen. Until it happened again.
Detective Sarah Noble will need all her intuition - and some help from young Elliott Carter - to crack a case where nothing is as it seems.
A gripping new Slayton thriller with a shocking twist, from bestselling author Caroline Mitchell. Perfect for fans of Alex North and Cara Hunter.
The Detective Sarah Noble thrillers can be read as standalones, or in any order.

Another enjoyable book in this series
I've ended up listening to them slightly out of order, but that hasn't taken away from the overall story. Have enjoyed this book very much, and have already heard the next one, so am hoping for number 4!
The narration is good as well, impressed by the various accents the narrator is proficient in!
If you enjoy a murder mystery with a bit of a spooky twist, you'll like this series.

I like being back in this world and enjoyed this narration, Emma Gregory has an amazing knack.
Story wasn’t as good as the first, but still kept me listening!

Lead lady cop is wetting her knickers
The storyline sounded good so I picked this as a second book in a 2 for 1 sale. Happy with my first book,. This one, however ...
the narration, sounds like a child reading an adult book. A LEAD DETECTIVE SHOULD NOT SOUND LIKE A FRIGHTENED CHILD, PISSING IT'S PANTS before it's even left the Police Station.
This apparently is the second in a series, evidenced by the authors assumption that the reader knows what happened before. The friend characters sound exactly the same as the lead female (when she's not wetting her pants), apart from an astonishingly bad American accent (and of course she's American, overweight and neurotic). I can't comment on the story because I lost patience with the "little girl" narration about an hour in. My first (and hopefully, only) DNF of 2023.

This woman would never be a cop in real life
I enjoyed the overall story but it was let down by the highly irritating and incredibly weak in all senses female lead character.
We were supposed to believe she was a police officer but this character wasn't able to handle the slightest aggression and was as assertive as a wet lettuce. To compound this annoying trait she then made idiotic decisions (I will go into the wood to a suspects house and not tell anyone) face palm right there!!!
Other than the lead made a terrible police officer, the murder mystery its self kept me listening despite my dislike of the lead. I wouldn't read another book with this character arc but maybe another non related mystery.

Well worth a listen
Format: audiobook
Narrator: Emma Gregory
Well I’d definitely avoid Slayton!
Although this book and book 1, The Midnight Man, are individual stories it would be best to read book 1 first as that introduces Detective Sarah Noble and will help in understanding her and the other characters better.
Another enjoyable story unraveling the secrets of a decades old crime and a nice twist regarding the killer!
Again Emma Gregory does a fantastic job with the narration.

A bit like The Shinning…
Not as good as book one but still enjoyable. Lots of characters and red herrings abound but a wee bit too much of the supernatural for my liking. Will wait for book 3 ..

Loved it!
I have only recently discovered Caroline Mitchell when I read The midnight man (which also had me hooked!). When I saw there was a second book to the series out I had to have it and I wasn’t disappointed. Another gripping tale that will keep you guessing until the end. The narrator was also really good at bringing the different characters to life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
