Look at the world around you ...
" Look at the world around you ..." Frank and Linda had been together for nine years, married for nearly half that time. But now their marriage is falling apart. Their long time friends, Dylan and Trevor, were on the verge of ending their marriage but now they seem closer than they have ever bee. Their secret? They undertook an unconventional and little known therapy simply called The Method. They wouldn't say any more than that other than it was nearly expensive though they did give Frank the contact address. Three weeks later, Frank and Linda arrived at the remote lodge where their intensive counselling was to take place. From its earliest beginnings, this book strongly hinted at a commonality with the Michael Douglas film, The Game. Nothing wrong with that. And the first half of the story was increasingly thrilling with both physical and psychological trauma engulfing the couple, reality sliding out of control. But for this reader the book pushes that little bit too far in it's later stages, more to shock than provide a viable conclusion - and I seriously doubt that the desired reconciliation would have been possible given Linda's earlier "terrible year" response to her cancer. But this is somewhere the book does not go, sadly. Rick Gregory's narration is good, well paced and clear, read with just the right emotional imput and good intonation even though his voice had a downbeat feel: again, not unfitting for the text. Little distinctive character voice definition but that didn't matter as it was always clear no was speaking. His reading certainly added to the enjoyment of the book. I was fortunate in being freely gifted a complimentary copy of the Method, at my request, by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you. Although I did enjoy it very much, I do feel that it could have been so much better, less gratuitous towards the end with just a little more explanation, not of all that happens but a simple touch down with reality if only to assist the couple in their ongoing wellbeing - in much the same way that The Game brings resolution. After all that has happened, it seemed to end too abruptly. But it was a good read, one I would recommend to all enjoying violent psychological thrillers where the real and the unreal twist and merge.

These doctors need help
This book is like listening to glass break. It is shocking and brutal, and cuts you in a thousand different ways. You don't realize that it is your head going through a sheet of plate glass that makes the sound because you never see it coming. You are the proverbial bird flying into the glass door.
Ralston sets you up by making this look normal. A couple deeply in love begins to drift apart due to an illness, and some friends suggest that they go through the "method" as they did. For them, the method helped their relationship. So, our protagonists go off into the deep woods to try to repair their relationship. Things don't go so well, there are hidden cameras, lack of cell phones, and infidelity to contend with. This is the part where you are blissfully flying at the invisible glass door.
On a walk, the couple witness a murder, and run back to get help, only to find that their retreat has been taken over by some crazy militia types; this is you going through the glass at breakneck speed.
The parts that follow are a tad brutal and has a feel like a Serbian Film lite. Dark and deep, but not THAT dark and deep. This is where the broken glass cuts you into strips and ribbons. What follows is a little predictable and a little surprising. This is where you bleed out. The end leaves you wondering how you got there; how you made it through all of that in one piece, albeit a little worn from the experience. I enjoyed this book for what it was, and would certainly suggest that you try it, too. Just look out for glass doors.
Rick Gregory really plays this out smartly, he narrates this like he was in the cabin going for therapy and drives home the couple's desperation and fear like he was in a cab on overtime. I truly appreciate his narrative skill and pacing techniques. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Crazy counselling!!
Frank and Linda think the spark is gone from their marriage, and after hearing about an amazing retreat/marriage counseling, they decide to give it a go. Things seem to going ok, until they meet another couple there and find hidden cameras in every room. Things start getting even worse when Frank gets hurt and they hear something they shouldn't have. Some locals aren't happy with where the place is situated and Frank and Linda are caught in the cross fire. Will their marriage survive the method? I have to say that this was one crazy a$$ counselling service!! That's all I'm going to say about it because this is so much better if you go into it knowing nothing!! The pacing of the plot was great. It was fast paced, entertaining and had some twists thrown in, but I had a lot of it figured out early on. I also found a lot of it was too far fetched and I was rolling my eyes a lot! I liked Frank and Linda and wanted the counselling to work on them!! They worked well together and were well developed. In all, this was a good quick read. I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted but I will have to check out more from this author. Rick Gregory read this really well. He was clear and concise and had plenty of tones and voices for the characters, I enjoyed his performance. I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Couple's Retreat meets The Game
Duncan Ralston delivers again. I would consider this quite tame for his normal level of depravity and gruesomeness. This had its gruesome moments but I felt like this was more psychological horror versus actual blood and guts horror and Duncan is a master at psychological horror. This twisted story will keep you wondering what is actually going on the entire time, and when it is all over you just want to hug your loved one tight. I felt like I went through couple's therapy when I was done.
I felt like this story was an amped up version of the The Game with Michael Douglas. You never know what is real and what is part of The Game or The Method in this case. This Method is a very dangerous game of radiation therapy, kill everything with the attempt at saving the marriage. The two main characters are relateable and likeable, everyone else you will strongly dislike. The setting was perfect to give you that feeling of being isolated. This plot is a rough one and you will most likely need a shower after you are done.
Rick Gregory has the perfect voice for this style book and does a great job reading such terrifying stories. He did mispronounce a few words but it didn't really bother me.

Good Lord.
Note to self: don't get married, have problems and end up at a retreat in the woods. 'The Method' was an exhilarating and terrifying story about a couple experiencing marital problems who decide to try out a suggestion from their friends. They soon learn that that was an enormous mistake, as they are running and fighting for their lives. This story was fun from top to bottom, I could barely put it down. It has a satisfying conclusion and Rick Gregory never disappoints with his fantastic narration. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone who enjoys the horror genre, it's a really unique and thrilling one! 3.5* - twisty psychological thriller
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a story about extreme marriage counselling. It's also thought-provoking from an ethical perspective. I think that the reason why I gave this story 3.5 stars (and not more) is because I didn't find it to be believable. Of course, as readers we know it's fiction. But when I try to get inside the heads of Frank and his wife, trying to sympathize with what they see/hear/experience, I'm skeptical. Milgram experiments aside, I don't think it's a believable scenario. I think it's possible to torture someone psychologically without having to resort to bear traps. And I don't particularly buy in to how they arrived at the resort (via the recommendation of their friends) - if my friend was recently recovering from cancer, I would never suggest that she sign up for 'The Method'. Frank's wife was facing an existential threat with her cancer and it ultimately drove them apart as a couple, so I'm not persuaded that a 'love is pain' approach would work with these two. Thus my skepticism. It's an interesting thought-experiment, though, so I can see why other reviewers gave this story 4 or 5 stars! The narrator was satisfactory - most other reviewers here gave him 4 or 5 stars and I can understand why. I kept getting a bit distracted by his inflection/tone, though. I think I have a subjective preference for deeper-voiced narrators (male and female) whose voices have more resonance. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Insane!
So if you were to combine a couples retreat, marriage counselling, and extreme gaslighting, you might come close to what this book's characters endured. All I can say is, the Method works for those who truly need it to, and can keep their mouths shut, and woe unto those who try to break their contracts! And no, I'm not going to tell you who makes it out at the end. This was a skin of the teeth book, from beginning to end. I was literally stunned at the outcome. Both the author and the narraror did an awesome job with this. My only question is: who thinks this stuff up,and who is able to read it with a straight face and convincing tone? My answer lies with this book. Omg.

Except for some laughable pronunciations, the narrations was pretty good. The story was far-fetched to say the least. How much can a human body take? Just not believable. The narrator kept me listening.
