Summary

Last voyage, Captain Maddox entered a distant star system with a Swarm fleet. The sheer numbers were staggering, a 100-1 advantage against all human spacecraft. If the highly aggressive, racist insects gained hyper-spatial tube technology - allowing them to cross 1,000 light-years in seconds - it would mean Armageddon for Earth.

Star Watch desperately needs something powerful to offset the annihilating Swarm numbers. As if on cue, Professor Ludendorff declares he has discovered the whereabouts of ancient Builder technology, a tech so potent it could defeat the Swarm.

Star Watch takes the bait, ordering Captain Maddox to find the lost planet holding the ancient technology.

Ludendorff has a plan involving androids to lure his arch rival - Methuselah Man Strand - to his doom.

The crew of Starship Victory knows nothing of this, and thus blindly enters a web of intrigue and danger. The captain will need the AI Galyan, Valerie, and Riker like never before. Humanity's hope against the coming Swarm holocaust rests on the outcome.

The Lost Planet is the sixth book in the Lost Starship series.

Exciting battles if rather quickly sorted out

A good listen and well narrated, the chacters are still a bit 2d, but you get used to it. As with previous books a need to go somewhere came out of nowhere, but provided a good narrative for many a tricky situation to get out of. It all got sorted out a bit quickly and tidily at the end though. Looking forward to the next and maybe last installment of this series as it doesn't look too good for the humans.

The Lost Planet

I have bought the whole series as soon as they are released I like the plot and love the great mix of characters, I have learnt shouting out to the heroes " don't trust him" just doesn't work :) can't wait for the next audio book and hope it will not be a long wait , Colin from Cardiff, Wales

Enough, I think

Although I have enjoyed series (well, most of it), I do think this has reached the end of its journey.

The underhanded dealings of Ludendorff, which we all know will be thwarted by Maddox; the continuing battles with Strand, which we all know, by now, will fail so that they can continue, endlessly; the hysterical Valerie who, no-one with any sense, would allow near a Bridge, let alone control one. Finally, Keith, the Scot who seems to struggle between the Scottish accent and Cockney insofar as no self respecting Scot I know would ever use the terms ‘mate or love’.

I doubt I will get the next book as the series seems to have lost its shine.

Best Captain Maddox story yet

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lost Planet to be better than the print version?

I thoroughly enjoy switching from reading to listening, different experiences but both equally good for Heppner books

Who was your favorite character and why?

Captain Maddox, although strong and brilliant, and self-confident, he's very much aware of his humanity. Others see his self-confidence as arrogance, but the reader gets to see the self-doubts and fear that he deals with. Heroes are much more interesting than superheroes, and Heppner holds out the constant threat of failure for all of his heroes -- you know that Maddox will pull through, but it is as much because of his values as his strength and intelligence.

Which scene was your favorite?

Near the end when Maddox meets with Darius. Two vastly different men find commonality through the mutual respect that only those dedicated to being warriors can achieve.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The battle for space just went underground.

Any additional comments?

Mark Boyett's narration is awesome.

Downward Slope

I have very much enjoyed the series thus far, and Boyette continues to excel in this latest installment. The Lost Planet, however, loses some marks this time around. Where the previous books had grand scope and hidden intrigues, this one seemed only contrived as we witnessed - once again - Strand's uncanny ability to read the author's mind.

The Lost Planet also departs from the feeling of an epic space adventure as a large majority of Maddox's time is spent planetside employing gun barrel diplomacy. Although, it is nice to see Valerie finally get her chance to shine. Perhaps that was the author's intent.

The Lost Planet does entertain, for what it's worth. Maddox is his usual brusque, no-nonsense self. We meet a new alien species, and, like usual, things aren't all gumdrops and ice cream.

In the end, this book seems like a bridge. Simply there to connect two more important pieces. Wether that's the case can only be determined in the next release.
