About this listen

In this classic work of economic history and social theory, Karl Polanyi analyzes the economic and social changes brought about by the great transformation of the Industrial Revolution. His analysis explains not only the deficiencies of the self-regulating market, but the potentially dire social consequences of untempered market capitalism. New introductory material reveals the renewed importance of Polanyi's seminal analysis in an era of globalization and free trade.

This audiobook is expertly read by David Pickering, and was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont. Audio engineering by David Pickering and Blake Rook.

Narration is superb; an excellent vocal performance perfectly suited to this classic text. Stiglitz provides useful modern context. Block gives an excellent overview of the themes and concepts. If you only listen to one political text for our times, then this is it. Incredibly relevant to all that happened/is happening with the GFC, Brexit, Trump, the rise of the right, pushback against climate policies and soon the impacts of AI - Polanyi’s theory presented here has powerful explanatory power around markets and society and has never been more relevant in this age of increasing fragmentation and gridlock.

Superb audible performance of this political economy classic
