Summary
My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home...
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.
As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.
She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'
My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere...
An utterly gripping psychological thriller from the number one bestselling author of The Marriage. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and Lisa Jewell then you will be hooked by The Girlfriend.

Not the usual K L Slater! Very disappointing.
Very disappointing. A silly and unbelievable plot which made little sense. It felt like twists were slotted in with no explanation. I stuck with it hoping it would improve but it didn't. This is the first time that I haven't enjoyed one of her books.

Not bad
This isn’t my favourite book by Slater but it’s certainly not the worst.
Although I pondered over giving it a pass during the first few chapters I’m glad I persevered as it did start to flow smoother.
FYI The killer was not the person I thought it was! (always a good thing).
There were perhaps a few unnecessary “secrets” to add suspense/drama but I found myself saying “why would you do that?!” out loud, on several occasions, and rolling my eyes!
It was easy to listen to while doing chores & commuting and it wasn’t too gory or unsettling that I couldn’t listen to it in bed.
Overall I’d give it 3 stars ⭐️

Like an ITV drama
I kept thinking that this was like the audio equivalent of the average ITV drama; i.e. two-dimensional characters, silly plot and a bit cringeworthy. If you're looking for something light to pass the time then this might do, but I wouldn't recommend it if you can find something better to spend your credit on. The narration wasn't very inspiring either. Pretty sure I could do a better job than half of these Audible narrators, I wonder where they get them from,

Uh, what?
Really far fetched. The main character is so dumb and unbelievably irritating I found myself on team girlfriend. Who in this age does not have a lawyer?!
And the kids…ick. Both were evil and unlikeable. Maybe that was the author’s intention. Birds of a feather. Author needs a sequel with both Miller and Sylvie growing up to be serial killers.
I do like the author’s writing. I think she is a good writer. I tend to be critical of unrealistic story lines and gaping plot holes.

One of my favorites so far
I've listened to a lot of K.L. Slater's books, and while they've all been good, this was next level with twists. I love it when the bad guy isn't easily spotted, and this story had multiple layers of intrigue. It was an enjoyable story overall.

Twisted and frustrating
I wonder how many women would give in in this situation. I think the plot gave the main character a weak character driven by fear. The girlfriend has a lot of nerve! I would absolutely not give in to her demands; More avenues seemed open to the wife. In the end, it was entertaining but frustrating.

What a twist
Didn’t see it coming. But glad it did. What an unbelievable set of consequences. British accent and whispering narrative was hard to take at times.

Take a perfectly good story….
So disappointed by this ending. Why are so many female writers putting these bizarre, unlikely twists into the stories that only wind up changing the reader’s overall feeling about the story. Truly disappointing.
