The Jewish Baker and the Deaf Porn Star
- By Erryn Barratt on 07-12-20
Summary
"Between the thick fur and my own nerves, it took longer than it should’ve to find the fluttering proof of his heartbeat. I’d known he was alive since he didn’t smell like death. No...he smelled like...home. Like my home. The one place where I would always belong.
Lucian Smith, unwanted at birth, is a defiant alpha who’d not only dare anyone to call him unclaimed, he’d proudly display the proof. He doesn’t want or need a pack other than the family he’s built with his crew - the West Coast Wolves. For so long, it was just them - an unlikely pack of alphas who took to the open road and helped where they could, doing random acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return.
Until the first of one of them stepped up when duty called and took his own pack to rule. This ended the brothers-in-arms’ days of riding wherever the road took them when fate conspired to give each of the brothers a pack to rule. Even Lucian... the unlikely defiant alpha who would not only dare anyone to call him unclaimed, but proudly display the proof.
While out on a night’s ride, Lucian comes across a half-dead dog on the side of the road. After stopping to help, he discovers it’s no dog, it’s a shifter - an omega wolf. The true mate Lucian never dared hoped for is now in his arms, if he can just rescue him first. Little does he know there are a dozen more omegas who need saving; his mate is just the start.
With a secret over 20 years old and millions of dollars at stake, the people who stole innocent babies with plans for the ultimate payday won’t let go of them easily. Except, even omegas have hidden strength and their own ways to fight back. With the help of his crew, Lucian is in a unique position to help these lost young men and set right to old wrongs.
This is the second book about finding joy in a hard world, building a family, and discovering that life can surprise a person when they least expect it. Although this world has harsher themes than my previous books, it still has the same heart you’d expect. Plus a dose of my irreverent humor and all the naughty, knotty heat that comes with true mates. It wouldn’t be a Susi Hawke book without it.
Note: possible trigger warning for mentions of stillbirth, medical abuse, and child abduction.

Great Story! Loved the narration!
This is the second book in the series, and I would recommend you read book 1 before this one. While some elements of this story can stand alone, there are some major factors that would be confusing if you don’t. Book one was enjoyable;
When we last saw Lucian, he had shown up on Matt and Eli’s door, with very little warning. He had a dying wolf in his arms, begging their healer to save him. When this book starts, we rewind a bit and not only discover who the wolf is, but what Lucian’s been up to with his newly appointed pack. He had rightfully killed their previous Alpha, thus inheriting his pack. Despite never being claimed by anyone, he felt like it was time for him to put down roots. Thirteen is a prisoner; he’s also an Omega. He has never known life outside of captivity, along with his twelve brothers of the heart. With careful planning, and assistance from a mysterious friend—along with ‘gifted’ brothers—he manages to escape, but gets wounded in the process. When he passes out, he is soon discovered by Lucian. Curiosity caused Lucian to stop, but it’s quickly revealed that it’s something much more powerful that pushes him to help the injured wolf at all costs. He’s his fated mate.
This story was just as sweet as its predecessor. It had action, humor, and was full of great characters of all kinds. Again, I found myself grinning throughout the book, and chuckling a few times. The interaction between the brothers was endearing, and you can’t help but love the 13 rescued omegas.
This was another well-written addition to the series, and I cannot wait to read what’s up next, for Nick. There was a scene, towards the end, that pretty much gives away the two main characters for book three. I’ve revealed the first one, and I will encourage you to read the book to find out who the second one is.
Nick J Russo is a fantastic narrator. His narration of this story will just remind you of that. He does a great job bringing them to life. I never have a hard time knowing who is talking when he’s at the helm.

More great characters and world building
The world has not been a good place for the omegas in this book, but they are strong and have a plan. Nothing could be better than for Lucian to find Thirteen, discover his fated mate and bring the cavalry in to help. Hawke continues her brilliant character creation and world building and Nick J. Russo brings everything perfectly to life. A great mix of shifters, fated mates and the hurt/comfort trope.

Fascinating, engrossing listen
I loved this angst-filled but heartwarming story. I’m a sucker for fated mates and here Lucian and Thirteen were so deserving of finding each other and their HEA. I would definitely read Book 1, The Reluctant Alpha, first; it gives you more context and background. But this world Susi Hawke has created is vivid, fascinating and full of multi-dimensional, imaginative characters that she brings to life. The story moves steadily and you won’t want to put it down.
Nick J. Russo narrates the audiobook and does his usual fantastic job. He is expert at infusing his voices with emotion - at giving a vocal performance, not just a narrator reading lines. Here, his tone is a perfect match for the story and I found his voicing of the characters took the book to the next level. Highly recommend!

Dark, Deep, and Moving
Some Susi Hawke books are funny. Some are sweet. Some are dark. Then there are the West Coast Wolves books. These books go there. To the dark places. To the horrific events that can be wrought upon the weak by the powerful.
Thirteen is being held captive. He doesn’t understand why. He’s been held since he was an infant, forced to grow up in a virtual prison with other omegas. He’s watched enough movies to know his life isn’t normal. He’s been indoctrinated into how his purpose in life is to serve alphas. He just doesn’t know to what end. Then things become clear, and he knows he has to escape. Right now.
Lucian was a bastard, never claimed by anyone. He bears no scar above his heart. He belongs to no one. Except he’s joined with a rag tag group of alphas who roam up and down the California coast, setting to right injustices, but keeping their own counsel. He’s a member of the West Coast Wolves Motor Cycle Cub and he does belong, but he’s also missing something.
Then he finds a dog in the road and his whole life changes. The dog is a wolf. An omega. And Lucian’s fated mate. And as much as he wants to claim his mate, there are things to be figured out – like where this omega has come from and why is he so skittish? Who are his kin? What danger might they be in?
The alpha and the omega come together, and then it’s incumbent on the West Coast Wolves to right the wrongs perpetrated against Thirteen and his ‘brothers’. Proof that family is more than just blood ties.
Like I said, this book goes to tough places. There are trigger warnings for a reason. But there is also hopefulness in the story. And, of course, because it’s a Susi Hawke, I also got my happy ending.
Nick J. Russo narrates these stories, and I have to say it’s a good fit. He does the books justice and there are more in the series, so here’s hoping they come to audio soon.

I defiantly challenge you not to like this book
This is The Defiant Alpha Book 2 in The West Coast Wolves seriesby Susi Hawke.
The is my favouite so far.
Lucian was reluctant to have his own pack until he killed another pack's alpha . On his way to meet his new pack he comes across a dog lying on the side of the road and is drawn to it. It turns out to be his fated mate
.Only known as Thirteen, he has escaped from his life in captivity with up to 15 other young omegas. He got wind that he was about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, so the omegas put into action their long standing plan to escape.
This tells the story of Thirteen's escape and his blossomimg romance with Lucian. It also tells his backstory on how he came to be in captivity. I loved the connection Thirtteen has to all the other Omegas and how close they all are. And I loved Lucians connection to his Beta's family
It's a heart warming story of escape and love and Family
Narrated by Nick J Russo. He did a fantastic job of telling Lucian and Thirteen's story

Defiant Alpha finds his mate!
Lucian has been one of the happy go lucky alphas of the West Coast Wolves. He has a pack to lead, which he doesn’t take that seriously. But then he finds a mate, Thirteen, who is one gifted omega raised in captivity. He is the sweetest omega and fierce defender of his brothers. I loved how the unite to save them all. There are so many characters to pair, that I can’t wait for those stories. Another hit in the series. And the narration just enhances the beautiful story.

Defiant at its best
Lucian is unashamed of being an unmarked Alpha and found his family with the fellow Alphas of the West Coast Wolves. When he finds his mate near death ont he side of the road, he never could have imagined what Thirteen will bring into his life. Thirteen has had a very sheltered and tragic life but with the help of his brothers, he tries to find help for them with an escape.
You will find yourself absolutely drawn in by Nick's talent at bringing an unique voice to each character. Amazing as always.

The characters were likeable and well fleshed out and the writing style was compelling.
Nick Russo's audio delivery and narration was smooth and enjoyable.

The defiant alpha
This was a really great second book! I was so happy listening to it and getting to know these characters. I loved getting to see Lucian and Charlie and I just fell in love with them as the story progressed. I want all of Charlie’s brothers getting their own stories they were such great additions to the story! The narrator brought so much life to the characters and made the book even better! I can’t wait for more books in this series.

loved Lucy and charlie
This was the perfect mix of love story and action story. The rescue scene was amazing, though use caution if karma visiting the bad guys meaning some blood was spilt could bother you. though the bad guys had it coming.

Lucian & Charlie
Love this story of Lucian and Charlie/Thirteen, it's an excellent addition to the series. Lucian and Charlie are just perfect for each other and I'm so glad they found one another. I love how all the omegas band together to fight for their freedom and how Lucian really listens to Charlie. There are a lot of characters in this one but it's easy to keep track of them and the narrator is fabulous with all of their different voices and with the story itself. I can't wait to listen to more of this series. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this audio book.

Fantastic
This was absolutely fantastic. Nick truly brings Susi’s characters to life. Lucien and his true mate are adorable. Catching up with the other West Coast Wolves to is just hilarious. I love the camaraderie and compassion in these books

Riding to the rescue
As good as the first one was, I think this one was even better with more meat to the story. Lucien and Charlie were so likable as characters and I adore Charlie’s “brothers”. I definitely agree with Ash’s trophy at the end and it sets up the next book perfectly. Nick J. Russo does a great job with the narration and seems to be the perfect voice for this series.

Wolf shifters? Great! West Coast Wolves? OMG!!!
Jumping right in at Book 2 without even reading the synopsis (or even Book 1) and I got captivated immediately! I stared wide-eyed at the speakers as I concentrated on what I was hearing. Whoa! Where is Susi Hawke going with this audiobook? Is this what I think it could be? Is the writer going dark? It didn't matter! My goosebumps told me I was in for an exhilarating time and I found myself kind of glad the book was under five hours in length. Something told me my heart wouldn't be able to handle the excitement of a longer audiobook. Being narrated by the wonderful Nick J. Russo, I was certain every nuance of the story would be performed. Before the end of Chapter 2, I was contacting Susi Hawke on Facebook to rave about this work. It may have been ideal to stop and listen to Book 1 but I just didn't want to--I don't think I could stop if I tried. The story of Lucian and the omega wolf numbered 13 is all kinds of thrilling. You just don't know, folks! It is my sincerest hope Ms. Hawke has much more planned for this INCREDIBLE series.
