Summary

The name's Daniels, Jack Daniels - just like the whiskey you know. I'm a private detective. And I can't help butting my nose into other people's business. It's what I do. You get used to it. It becomes a way of life almost. After a while it comes natural to you, automatic, like breathing, or eating, although not quite as enjoyable. It's a habit that I just can't break. I just can't help it.

But sometimes it can lead you into trouble....

The Candy Man

Jack Daniels is a grouchy, seen-too-much kind of guy who still has a big, if somewhat battered, heart. I could hear him narrating as I read about him rescuing a damsel in distress, even when he knows he’s getting himself into trouble.

Surprisingly really good !

So short and still John Holt was able to create an amazing story, I’m truly amazed.
Coupled with the narration by Joe Voegler who have done a good job at that made this audiobook truly enjoyable.

Fully recommended for all !!!

My honest review even so that I got this audiobook for free.

The Candy Man

I like this book, just wished it had a British narrator, and the main characters were a little older, he just seems a little thick for his age, when talking about using the internet and other tec or daily life issues.

Good story, poor narration

When I first saw Jack Daniels, P.I. I couldn't help thinking of J.A.Konrath's Lieutenant Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels series, of which I've read several. This is nothing like those books.

The story is good and entertaining, though the stle made me think of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, as if the character is talking to the audience, or retelling the tale over a bar. The characters were nicely written and the plot moved along well and kept me interested.

Sadly the narration really let the book down with Joe Voegler's drawling monotone having very little life and seeming as though he was in a rush to get the words out, often running one sentence into another without a breath between. Very hard to listen to and it let book down in my opinion.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

Decent

Decent enough short story, pretty good plot and kept my interest throughout. Narration was fine for this type of story if a little laboured at times. Overall worth a listen

Humerous Detective Story

Overall it was an enjoyable detective story with a feel of the 50s era. The narrator did an excellent job and his tone was very suitable to the main character.

The Candy Man

Audible:An ok mystery book. I really think the horrible narration took away from the story. Joe Voegler runs at 1.25 monotone, all on his own with run on sentences barely stopping for a breath. The story itself has some fun quips.PI Jack Daniels is an ok guy. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

What a funny guy

Jack Daniel's is a funny guy. His sense of humor carries this story along, leaving me anticipating the next round of chuckles. He's a clever PI with a lot of spunk. Even his name makes me laugh. But he gets the job done. Unfortunately, I didn't care for the narrator. His speech is hampered and the audio quality had some issues, which I found distracting. I was offered a free book by the author and asked to leave an honest review.

Good short story but bad narration

This was my first John Holt's book. This was a good story. The Private Detective, Jack Daniels, has a good sense of humor and his investigation was interesting. This was a short and fast pace story. Unfortunately, the narration wasn't easy to listen and the narrator's voice was much older than the Jack Daniels's 38 year old. Fortunately, I always read/listen and this was very helpful this time. In fact, I think it was better to only read this story. Hopefully, the narrator for the books 2 and 3 isn't the same. I'll definitely read and listen the next books in the Series. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Narration Hurts

The narration on this book was very difficult for me to listen to and took away so much from the book. I would have preferred reading this book compared to listening to it with Joe Voegler. The premise of Jack Daniels (name like the whiskey) finding a woman collapsed and covered in blood and not seeking police help seemed off. Yes he has lots of questions and is inquisitive being a PI, but who takes a stranger into their home under those circumstances. His questions are not fully answered, and yet the story has some great twists. I would listen to more books by this author, but unfortunately stay away from the narrator.

Great start to this series

With a name like Jack Daniels, PI, you know this going to be an entertaining listen. John Holt has begun this series with a bang, having Jack investigating a case sure to bring him to final conclusion. When he meets Linda, and finds out her story, he finds out that she is leading him on a wild goose chase. But will he find out the real story? Daniels is a fun, spirited character, not afraid to put himself out there and takes the case through the twists and turns. I love how the story is in a dialogue fashion, so Daniels is telling us the story directly. It definitely makes this mystery a fun story. I did not find the narration of Joe Voegler very easy to listen to. His narration is not evenly paced, and the story to me sounds like he is in a tunnel giving it a hollow sound. A different narrator may have made the story "pop" more with this very entertaining character.

suggest you listen to the sample before buying.

John Holt The Candy Man is an old fashion detective story.
I enjoyed Jack Daniels character. I can just picture him getting court up with the beautiful woman.

There is no corse Language in it, or sex scenes. Although there is some violence it does not go into great details.

Narrator Joe Voegler reads the book as if Jack Daniels is telling the story. To me there seem some background noises. So I suggest you listen to the sample before buying.

Although I enjoyed the story line I feel the narrator lets it down. It’s a good quick story ideal to fill in that little bit of time.

Good Start

This is a good start to the series. I enjoyed the story and the almost noire feel. The narration did this story no favors, however. I think this would definitely benefit from a re-record.

Good Mystery

A good mystery although the narrator telling the tale, doesn't sound like the age he's suppose to be. He sounds more like GrampPa Jack, telling the tale to his grandkids. But the story was enjoyable and a quick listen and you enjoy the characters non-the-less .It also had a sharp wit when called for. So when you get a chance pick up a copy and enjoy.

The Candy Man

A great detective read. The detective Jack Daniels is on the case. I love the humor and the way the Author has brought the characters to fruition. The scenes are brought out so you can picture them in your mind as you listen to the Audiobook. The Narrator done a ok job. But I loved the story. I definitely recommend this mystery read. Its the first in the series.

Novella Crime

Loved the storyline. It was quick moving and complete. A surprise ending.

Joe was too quick in his speaking. It was understandable but it felt rushed. In addition, his speech was a bit lispy. I'm not sure if this was a vocal trait he intentionally gave to Jack Daniels or if there is another reason.
