Summary

The name's Daniels, Jack Daniels - just like the whiskey you know. I'm a private detective. And I can't help butting my nose into other people's business. It's what I do. You get used to it. It becomes a way of life almost. After a while it comes natural to you, automatic, like breathing, or eating, although not quite as enjoyable. It's a habit that I just can't break. I just can't help it.

But sometimes it can lead you into trouble....

Jack's on the case.

A good start. To what I hope promises to be a thrilling new crime series. For me to enjoy Jack seems to be quite smart and good at his job. Even if it seems to me he has a soft spot for the ladies. I really enjoyed listening to this.

Surprisingly really good !

So short and still John Holt was able to create an amazing story, I’m truly amazed.
Coupled with the narration by Joe Voegler who have done a good job at that made this audiobook truly enjoyable.

Fully recommended for all !!!

The Candy Man

I liked the story, it was short and fast-flowing. John Holt, as always, managed to keep me hooked from start to finish. The narration was a little annoying for me at the start. After a while though, I was able to adjust to it. Listening to the book was like listening to a man telling stories at a bar - it was really entertaining and funny at some points. Jack Daniels was a cool detective - the kind of man you would want to accidentally meet if you are ever in a dire need of protection.

Enjoyable Short Story

A very engaging story with lots of detail to paint a picture of the action. The narration adds additional atmosphere and moves along at just the right place. I enjoyed listening to this nicely plotted and executed audio book.

Didn't your mother ever warn you...?

This is one of those audiobooks where the melding of narrator and text is so seamless that it feels like the actual character is sitting across a bar table telling the listener his story. So well written, Jack Daniels, private detective, is alive, a bit careworn perhaps, but solid and real. He mostly investigates possible infidelities, 'spying' to garner evidence for a client's divorce. But he's also a bit of a reluctant good Samaritan, with a penchant for a pretty face. So when he sees a young woman in distress, he steps in to help.
Told as a somewhat self depreciating monologue, which at times slightly rambles off into other directions only to be pulled back again to the main story, all expertly performed by a soft spoken, world weary Joe Voegler, this short (under two hours) book nevertheless captures everything, time, place and, of course, Jack Daniels himself. No great peaks of excitement but instead emerges a simple tale of murder and deception which holds the listener throughout.

I had requested this book and was very.fortunate in being freely gifted a complementary copy by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. It is a little gem and recommended to anyone who enjoys good detective Noire stories, with full characterisation at the forefront, complimented by a superb narration.

Humerous Detective Story

Overall it was an enjoyable detective story with a feel of the 50s era. The narrator did an excellent job and his tone was very suitable to the main character.
