Summary

I'm not a gambling man. I mean, life's one big gamble, ain't it? The odds are stacked against you; you just can't win. You know there are some people who will do anything to make sure that they win, even if it means eliminating anyone or anything that stands in their way. They only bet on a sure thing...a Dead Certainty.

Excellent !

Well written short detective story.
Excellent Performance .
A beautiful reminder of Hollywood style detective story with the jazz background.
Only wish it was longer but beside that there is no negative that I can find with this creation.

Jack Daniels is a likable guy.

What's not to like about Jack Daniels. He's got a witty, carefree attitude, and gets the job done. He's a private eye with an amusing attitude. Miguel Rodriguez does a fabulous job of giving his character life. This is a promising series by a talented writer. Thanks, John Holt for the opportunity to review for you.

Jack Daniels and Horses

Gambling has never been my thing but mysteries certainly are, so I really liked this short story. Jack Daniels is becoming one of my favorite fictional private investigators and for this book, he did what he does best - solve the mystery and entertained his readers/listeners.

John Holt is a gifted author and I am always looking forward to listening to his books. Miguel Rodriguez gave life to the characters pretty well.

A stable murder.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge horse racing fan. Don't get me wrong I like horses just not a betting girl. But I found myself invested in this plot. I wanted to know who done it and why. The author and narrator have a way of sucking you in and making you feel like you're helping with this case. As a sort of sidekick almost. Really enjoying this series so far.

A Dead Certainty

Jack Solves another case with his PI skills! The story of a horse and if it was murdered or died of natural causes need to be solved and luck for us the owner hires jack to figure it out. Jack still does his rambling, but they usually give me a chuckle out of it. Great narration as well.

Jack Daniels At The Stables

Our PI, Jack Daniels, is asked to stay at a racing stables up state to check out the death of a horse and other incidents. The excellent narration adds to the pleasure of this 'who done it' novella. The dialog both external and internal is good with a nice twist in the tail. An enjoyable listen.

Meh

This was a short listen but I'm not sure it was time well-spent. I like the Jack Daniels character but not in this incarnation. The mystery was a bit of a yawn.

The narrator was okay. I mean, I didn't hate him. I prefer the narrator in book one though.

This listen was just 'meh.'

Can't Beat Death

This is the second book by John Holt that I have listened to, and this one is very enjoyable. I thought the narration was fitting, and the performance easy to listen to. I loved how the author was able to incorporate some very classic quotes into the book as well. The setting with a stable for the background of this book was original as well. I loved how Jack Daniels was making his bets, as who killed the horse and caused the other incidents. Then again, Jack is not a betting man. Only thing you are certain on is death and taxes. The chapter titles were spot on with the story. I would definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review.

What Are The Odds?

World-weary private eye Jack Daniels gets a break from divorce work and takes on a case he doesn't quite believe in--the murder of a horse. Race track terminology is frequently used tongue-in-cheek and to good effect as the sinister plot is uncovered in this paean to noir.

Mystery dinner in book form.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. The character was wrotten well enough nlbut the narration was off to me. Blended lones together made it hard to follow sometimes and took me out of the story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Slowing down some of lines so it was easier to follow the narration. His voice was fine just needs a bit more practice to know when to breath and give that space.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

See above.

Was A Dead Certainty worth the listening time?

It was okay. See above for my issues.

Any additional comments?

I received this book for free in exchange for an voluntary unbiased review.

I hope lessons were taken from this amd maybe go back a bit and try to listen to what I heard.

Great quick read

A Dead Certainty by John Holt was a great quick read. This is the second novella in The Jack Daniels P.I. Series. This is another great novella that follows Jack Daniels solving tough to crack cases.

2-stars says it all; it was just "OK"

Unless perhaps you are a horse racing enthusiast I'm not sure this would be a listen getting excited about. The story, albeit a mystery, just struck me as a yawner. There just wasn't much excitement or intrigue. Even the narration, though not bad, was just okay.

This is one of the few books that I have listened to in which I really couldn't recommend spending a credit on. I did a search on the author, John Holt, and found some other titles with the main character being 'Jack Daniels' as part of a series, but this title wasn't linked to it in any way that I could find. If this is not a standalone book, then Audible is not doing the author any favors with how this title is being listed.
