Summary

After years of physical and mental abuse, Jade thought her kindly foster mother would be the answer to her prayers. She was wrong....

This is her staggering true story.

‘This must be what prison is like,’ I thought as another hour crawled by. In fact, prison would be better...at least you knew your sentence. You could tick off the days until you got out. In the Bad Room we had no idea how long we’d serve.

After years of constant abuse, Jade thought her foster mother, Linda Black, would be the answer to her prayers. Loving and nurturing, she offered 10-year-old Jade a life free of fear.

But once the regular social-worker checks stopped, Linda turned, and over the next six years Jade and three other girls were kept prisoner in a bedroom they called the ‘bad room’.

Shut away for 16 hours at a time, they were starved, violently beaten, forbidden from speaking or using the toilet and routinely humiliated. Jade was left feeling broken and suicidal.

This is the powerful, true story of how one woman banished the ghosts of her past by taking dramatic action to protect the life of every vulnerable child in care.

Emotional

I felt so frustrated listening to how the system failed all these children & how long they had to endure this torture and torment. Jade you should be so proud of yourself of how brave & strong you are. Thank you for telling your story

Jade a very strong little girl

This book shows social services for the awful people they were and the drama that this little girl went through.
My granddaughter suffered from the hands of her mother & new partner & even though I kept complaining to social services I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall. Her mother pulled the wool over their eyes as well even threatening to tell lies about them & getting them sacked. Of course just like Jade she believed her mother & just like Jade she looked after her brother & sister. Eventually my grand daughter had theropy in fact all the children (in total 6) would need it.
This book of child neglect ect.. Could do with given to all social services if only to make them realise that anybody that cares for children can lie, on the other hand the social services have to be careful. So they do need to listen as like Jade if they had dug more Jade would I'm sure opened up, thank goodness for the school, again this shows that the schools play a big part in identifying what is going on.
The narrators got it just right as well.
I wish Jade all the happiness she is long overdue, what a brave little girl you were.

Heartbreaking but insightful

this book tells the story of how a system so heavily relied on failed a poor girl for years. this book also showed me the resilience of a young girl who never gave up hope even when it was all she had left.

The Bad room

This was a great book, the story really shows how so many children are failed by the system. Failed by all the people who are supposed to be there to protect children.

The audio was really well narrated and brought the book to life.

The bad room

what a hard and awful childhood you had.
so glad you finally got away, should of been sooner.
I hope your adult life is so much happier now.
Linda should never of been a Foster carer, things should of been put into place alot earlier than it did.
what a very heartbreaking true life book you have wrote, hopefully it will open people's eyes to what can happen to children when placed in the wrong hands.

Amazing story. Unmissable

I gave this book a bash while I was working and couldn’t stop. I completed it in a day. It’s such a harrowing and horrific tale from such a brave person. You feel like you want to jump in the book and stop it from happening. An unmissable read, can’t recommend it enough. 5*
