Story
This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.

It's natural for people to make compromises and small sacrifices for the sake of their loved ones. In a healthy relationship, these sacrifices are mutual and both partners respect each other's needs. However, it looks like your relationship is off-balance: You're sacrificing your dreams and your identity to someone who likes having you under total control. You deserve to be loved, not controlled.

Codependent behaviors are some of the most difficult relationship patterns to identify, yet it's rarely discussed and often considered another form of "clinginess". When you come to rely on outside factors for validation and a sense of identity, these "do good" habits can do more harm than good. You may suddenly feel obligated to stay in a constricting relationship that turns you into a victim. Don Barlow knows firsthand the transformational effects of recovering from codependency and has compiled the knowledge he gained over the years so others can experience the same freedom.

In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society.

Recovery will be helped by listening
- By RM on 11-01-15
Summary
For over two decades, The Addictive Personality has helped people understand the process of addiction. Now, through this second edition, author Craig Nakken brings new depth and dimension to our understanding of how an individual becomes an addict. Going beyond the definition that limits dependency to the realm of alcohol and other drugs, Nakken uncovers the common denominator of all addiction and describes how the process is progressive.
Through research and practical experience, Nakken sheds new light on:
- Genetic factors tied to addiction
- Cultural influences on addictive behaviors
- The progressive nature of the disease
- Steps to a successful recovery
The author examines how addictions start, how society pushes people toward addiction, and what happens inside those who become addicted. This new edition will help anyone seeking a better understanding of the addictive process and its impact on our lives.

and it was all going so well...
This book started as a highly educated guide to healing addition...
and then the added nonsense about "spiritual journey", "devine meaning" and talk of the soul could have been easily replaced with "emotional health", "purpose or passion" and "sense of self"
Disappointing for a book I hoped was a scientific research book.
