The narrator is amazing: Sarkis' northern accent is fabulous, and the bird is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard.
Unfortunately the story was disappointing, or rather the characters. They're both way too insecure for 40 year olds and we're given way too much time with their navel gazing. This is an attempt to increase romantic tension but doesn't work because to readers there's no suspense regarding what the respective other one is feeling, which means that to us the characters just look weepy and contrivedly dense. 15 year olds angst in old bodies that should know better. Bottom line, too much sappy, bodice ripper romance in my adventure novel. I wish the romance didn't overtake the plot so much.
BUT there was no point I wanted to put the book down and not come back. I wanted to know how it ends and I'd listen to the next installment. In fact I hope there is a next installment and we get to see the other swords.

T. Kingfisher has done it again. 2nd book this year of hers that I loved (the other one is: A Wizards Guide of Defensive Baking).

I loved the narrator. I thought she was great - good voices for all characters. I loved the characters and the concept of the Sword - Sarkis being the Sword.

This book had me laughing out loud a lot - I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.

So glad I found this book. Has minor characters with wit, innovative monsters and some really funny lines. Highly recommended.

I'm normally a fan of t kingfisher as I think she turns a lot of the typical romance and fantasy tropes around and approaches them from new and funny angles. This one though left me pretty irritated and agreeing with the villain! the female main character is a twit! and the stupid 'misunderstanding' plot is so annoying and honestly made me lose all sympathy for the protagonists. I liked the world building and the side characters and would be interested in more books set in this world, I just think Halla is a useless prat.

The narrator is great at all aspects apart from a Scottish accent which she is dreadful at, for some reason she does one for the male main character. It's off-putting and deeply unsexy (unless you are horny for shrek, in which case this may be the book for you!)

It really is a feel good story that I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed as much as I did, normally preferring dark romantacy! The FMC had me laughing and was utterly charming! The MMC was very likeable too! They are both older MC’s, scarred, battle worn, wide hipped etc…quite relatable! Really lovely read.
