Summary

Sam Baker couldn’t be more normal. He’s a teacher at the local middle school and the most exciting part of his day is dealing with a classroom full of hormonal preteens. His life takes a turn for the weird one stormy night when he finds a small boy on his doorstep. A boy who growls, flashes unnaturally blue eyes, demands for Sam to call the alpha - whatever that is - and gives Sam the one name he wishes he could forget: Vaughn Jerrick.

Vaughn Jerrick is the alpha to a pack of wolf shifters and a doctor to the supernatural world. After sharing a steamy one night stand with Sam years ago, Vaughn couldn’t consider the possibility of a future with the man, no matter how much he wanted him. Bringing a human into his world is against the rules, but one phone call changes everything, and Vaughn finds himself face-to-face with the man who could give him everything he’s ever wanted.

Rescuing one small child turns into saving six from a dark and uncertain fate, and although Sam doesn’t understand the world he’s been forced into, he would never turn his back on children in need, even if it means confronting his past with Vaughn.

As Vaughn and Sam join forces to protect the children put into their care, the future they’ve both dreamed of is within their reach, but first they need to survive the sinister force looking to rip away everything they’ve come to hold dear.

Wow, what a start to a series

New to me, author Macy Blake and what can I say apart from I loved it.

Seriously good world-building, great start to a new series, the characters have depth and feeling, and we have children and lots of them, a human and a shifter alpha, a welcoming pack, and so much happening.

I Don't want to spoil things for you, but there is hot sex. What more could we ask for from an author, oh yes, the next book, please, thankfully, I started the series when all the books were on Audible, so I started the second book immediately.

The narration was on point, but Michael Dean never disappoints me. I did, however, speed up to 1.35 on Audible, which is my norm.

5⭐️

This is where it all started. Michael’s strong voice smoothly works for both Vaughn and Sam as well as lending itself to the lighter children vocals. Really enjoyed this audio.

Sweet and intriguing teaser

I enjoyed this sweet and intriguing audiobook. It was the fun, suspenseful, story of fated mates Sam, a human, Vaughn, a wolf-pack Alpha shifter, and six kidnapped children, including shifters and a mage/seer. I enjoyed seeing the relationships form, but I am eager to dive into the next book, as this one gave more questions than answers. So many questions...about backgrounds, the children, the prophecy, and more. There is a soft cliffhanger ending, presumably leading into the next book.

The narration by Michael Dean is fantastic. He provided so many terrific voices, tones, and accents for all the characters.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Cute and Romantic

Sweet Nothings is the prequel to the Chosen One series. I’ve seen it marketed as book 0 in the series, so I figured it was the perfect place to start my Chosen One journey. And oh my, I LOVED it. This book has some minor flaws, but honestly I don’t even care. I love found family and protective parents trope. Mix that in with an interesting plot full of magic and paranormal entities and some intriguing world building, and I was completely hooked on this book and ready to devour this entire series.

The audiobook was narrated by Michael Dean who does a fantastic job. I’ve been a big Michael Dean fan for a while, and it’s because he knows how to voice interesting characters and bring a story to life. The production of the audiobook was also well done and it just made for a fabulous listening experience.

Sweet 5 stars

I didn't know Macy Blake as an author before. But she has a wonderful writing style with a fascinating world building. The story is emotionally told and had me hooked from the beginning.
Macy Blake has created a great world where shifters live alongside humans in the real world. When Sam finds a frightened boy on his doorstep one night, he just has to help. But this boy with unnatural eyes is asking for Vaughn, of all people, who just left Sam years ago after a hot one-night stand.
As a listener, I was immersed in a great described world full of people and shifters. I liked Sam and Vauhgn from the start, they are both warm and very likeable and it's easy to empathize with them. It turns out that it's not just one kid in trouble, but several. The kids were cute as well as the overall story. I especially took Ollie and Henry to my heart.

Michael Dean's narration was on point - as always. He brought the story to life with many different voices - including those of the children. The emotions resonated with me as a listener and he was a pleasure to listen to. An interesting and entertaining audiobook that I am happy to recommend to others.

Great series!

These books have been out for a few months on audio, but when I was offered the opportunity to listen to and review all six, I seized it.

This story starts out pretty tense. Sam, an everyday average guy, finds a strange child at his doorstep. The boy demands Sam call Vaughn – the man he had a one-night stand with years ago. The man who ticks all his boxes. The man who walked away from him. Now Vaughn is back and Sam learns things are way more complicated than they seem. Vaughn is the alpha of a wolf shifter pack. Okay, mind blown. Vaughn and Sam race to rescue a group of children shifters as well as a young mage. Okay, mind blown again.

Sam’s invested though – and who wouldn’t be? Fox shifters and bear shifters and wolf shifters and, of course, dear Henry. But there are dark forces and then men and children are in grave danger until they can figure out how to defeat the bad people.

I loved the story and was especially drawn to Henry – which was a good thing. I’m intrigued and can’t wait to go on to the next book.

Quick shout out to Michael Dean who always does an amazing job – especially with the kids. On to the next book!

Title - Sweet Nothings (The Chosen One #0)
Author - Macy Blake
Genre - MM Romance, Paranormal, Shifters
Published - September 2018
Pages - 230 Pages

Sam Baker is a teacher at the local middle school, he's as normal as they come. One windy and stormy night he hears a strange noise at his back door, when he opens his door he finds a small boy on the doorstep. This small boy growls at Sam has unusually blue eyes and demands Sam call The Alpha. Turns out The Alpha is the man Sam never wanted to see again, Vaughn Jerrick.

Vaughn Jerrick is the Alpha to a pack of Wolf Shifters, he's also the doctor of the paranormal world. Years ago Vaughn shared a one-night stand with Sam Baker, he's never managed to get that night out of his head, but Sam is off-limits, he's human and in Vaughns's world, there's one main rule, humans can't find out about shifters.

With shifter children in trouble, Vaughn and Sam have to team up to rescue these children but can they protect their hearts and the world of the shifts in the process?

OMG, I fell in love with these characters so dam hard and so dam fast it's unreal. The children and so freaking cute it's unbelievable. Vaughn and Sam are bloody perfect together, they are ying and yang for each other. The characters were so well written, character development was brilliant.
The plot was fantastic, it kept me hooked and needing to read on. I found it to be well written, easy to follow and flowed well and I can't wait to read the rest.

This is a new author to me, I really enjoyed this author's writing style, there weren't any plot holes, I felt like everything was answered and it did an amazing job of making you want to read on in the series.

Amazing beginning

This book gives a basis for the upcoming series of The Chosen One and introduces us to Sam and Vaughn along with the Jerrick Pack. Sam is introduced to a whole new world when Ollie shows up on his doorstep. You will fall in love with Sam, along with so many others in this story.

Michael Dean does amazing with all the voices that this book has. Each one is unique and you will know who it is instantly.

Great introduction to this world!

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted the audio version of this book.

This is a prequel, an introduction into this world. Future books are based around another group of people but Henry is found here.

I really enjoyed this! It was interesting and i was fully engaged from start to finish.

I loved that Sam and Vaughn had some history, before the events of that night bring them back together. I loved that things were not as they seemed, for a lot of things, but some things were patently obvious, to everyone else anyway!

There are werewolves and witches, bears and foxes and I've no doubt that other magical/mystical beings will appear as the series progresses. I really can't wait!

Henry is marked here, as a Guardian of The Chosen One and his and the other Guardians stories follow this.

Michael Dean narrates. I love his work, but I jumped into this right after another of his work, a much darker, deadlier piece, and I kept waiting for something to go terribly wrong! It does, but not quite in the way THAT book does!

Dean's voices are clear and different, I had no trouble keeping up with multiple people taking part in a conversation. His reading voice is deep and even and I cannot fault it!

4 stars for the book
5 stars for the narration
rounded down to 4 stars
