Léopold Berry est au plus mal. Son père a pour lui de grandes ambitions qu'il ne cesse de décevoir, son quotidien est déprimant et, pour couronner le tout, il a des hallucinations. Il voit apparaître dans Los Angeles les personnages étranges et monstrueux d'une série télé dont il était fan quand il avait 12 ans : Les aventures de Max à Sunderworld.
Sauf que Leopold a grandi et que Sunderworld n'existe pas.
