I enjoyed this immensely, clearly a huge amount research involved given the detail with the nautical terminology, but without overdoing it, which really made it come to life for me. I loved the relatively straightforward plot, it felt gentle and easy to read, done with great economy without being simplistic.

The dialogue and it's performance was very well done, particularly the introduction of new languages into the flow of the story along with the new cultures.

Though relatively short, I think the series of interlinking stories with small time jumps worked very well, we're nicely rounded out and felt complete.

If I had to be critical I think the narration was a little rushed at times, and very occasionally a little flat. I would have welcomed the narrator taking their time and pausing more between sentences and paragraphs. The narration of the character voices was a contrast, and felt more alive and engaging.

I look forward to listening to Emily's other books! I have already read them all, but they are well worth listening to as well.

Thoroughly engaging and full of delicious detail!

Thank you to the author and narrator for gifting me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the story, but I would have loved to read about Gloria’s experiences with her training before diving straight into the story. A little backstory would have been very interesting.

The story is very fast moving, Gloria gets to meet a lot of interesting people over a period of around two years, but again, I would have loved to know more. It could easily be written as a book rather than a novella, I feel it is very short for fantasy fiction, which would be fine if it was a filler between longer books.

The narration was excellent, even at the 1.7 speed I like to listen on! I will be listening to the next story in the series.
