It’s clear the author knows his stuff when it comes to addiction and mental illness. Though I don’t know all that much about opioids myself, I listened to this one to learn more about the current health crisis around them.

I not only found lots of insightful information in this one, but I also learned of many interesting connections between opioid abuse and mental health.

As the author mentions in the introduction of the book, our society is founded upon self-gratification, which only fosters quick highs like the ones opioids provide. We’ll have to do a lot of work, on a societal level, to overcome the related crisis, but we can start with ourselves, our inner circles, and the helpful hints in this book.

Many helpful insights

As someone who used to work at the pain clinic, hearing about substance abuse and the opioid crisis is nothing new to me. Contrary to what many people believe, substance abuse is more common than you think. The issue is multidimensional and requires a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Environmental factor and social support from the people around the victim of substance abuse play a crucial role in rehabilitation and recovery. I find the information provided in this book quite accurate and love that it is presented in a compassionate, nonjudgmental way. The chapters are outlined in an easy to follow manner. The book even covers the scientific explanation of the various types of pain. I find the final chapter regarding natural remedy for substance abuse quite interested as you don't hear about them often in Western medicine and I appreciate that it was covered in the book as a supplementary treatment.
