Summary

Can rookie Cam’s sunshine steal veteran Dawson’s thunder?

Kicker Dawson Hall is ready to leave his past in the dust. His last season was catastrophically bad, with the distraction of his divorce and discovering that his father-in-law wasn’t managing his money—he was stealing it, instead.

He signs with the Toronto Thunder, poised for his redemption arc, but he’s grumpy and frustrated he has to undertake one at all. He should be better than this. He is better than this.

The new rookie punter’s hero worship might be just another annoyance, but Cameron Green is sweet and kind and more than a little naïve. He’s a country boy suddenly dumped amongst all the skyscrapers, with no idea of how the real world can chew him up and spit him out. It’s practically Dawson’s duty to mentor him and if Dawson soaks up a little of his sunshine, too?

Well, nobody could blame him for that. Not after the year’s he’s just had.

But when Dawson starts craving more and more of Cam, his crush dangerously teetering into passion kind of territory, he’s forced to not just confront his own past, full of disappointment and distrust, but his future, too.

He wants his redemption, and that perfect vision of a season feels just within reach. But it turns out he doesn’t just want Cam for single season—even if it’s everything he believed he wanted—he wants Cam for every season.

This was really cute! I enjoyed the relationship between Dawson and Cam, they were adorable. The story was a bit slow, I could have used a bit more going on while they were getting to know each other, but it makes sense for the situation. Rookie and veteran is always a fun vibe and I enjoyed both that and the role reversal. I'm very much looking forward to the next book.

Another compelling, beautiful and emotion packed story from Beth’s football franchise.

Dawson and Cam bring their whole hearts, even if they are in denial or hiding. Even when being a grumpy so-and-so, you can see it’s his bruised heart speaking, not the real him. And thankfully for Dawson, Cam is patient. He doesn’t push or demand, just quietly and consistently shows up, giving time and space for Dawson to build his own trust and confidence back.

It’s a gorgeous story, but is definitely helped along by the talented Darcy Stark. I always enjoy his performances. One of the things I truly like about him is that I can always tell the difference between characters - changing his voice, cadence, etc., means I never struggle to follow who’s speaking when.

emotional and beautiful journey

Dawson has been betrayed by those closest to him, which leaves him jaded and leery.
Cam is a sunshine and light rookie who's got some baggage of his own.
Together they learn to rely on each other and let love in again.
Darcy Stark did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.

Great addition to the series

After back to back betrayals, Dawson needed some sunshine in his life, and that's exactly what rookie punter Cam delivered. Their romance was sweet, steamy, and surprisingly cozy after just a few short days together. I don't even think Cam and Dawson realized that they skipped straight from awkward getting-to-know-yous to sleeping in the same bed most nights, but I was thrilled by how warm and happy they were together. Cam was struggling with being in a big city after growing up in a small town, but with Dawson by his side he grew more confident in going out and trying new things. Dawson was dealing with the aftermath of his ex-father-in-law's shady dealings, and I was really proud of him for bouncing back and not letting it continue to mess with his head or his game-time performance. Cam's support was a big part of what allowed Dawson to move on, and it wasn't easy for him to achieve that mental clarity. Dawson definitely had a tendency to beat himself up for things that were out of his control, and it took time and effort (and some of Cam's excellent pep talks) for him to find a healthier headspace. I really enjoyed following along with the first several games of the season, seeing the highs and lows of Cam's punts and Dawson's kicks and watching the team unify around a common goal. Aiden proved to be an excellent friend in this book, even if he is still a control freak, and his nudges were what helped Dawson open his eyes and see that happiness was right in front of him if he was brave enough to reach for it. When Cam's father Shane unexpectedly showed up, it could have been a disaster, but instead he served as the final catalyst for Dawson and Cam to realize they were head over heels in love and ready to stop pretending things were casual. I adored the HEA Beth Bolden crafted for these two and can't wait to see the next Toronto Thunder player meet their perfect match!

This story is hot and sweet with grumpy/sunshine vibes. I loved the interaction between these two guys. Darcy Stark did an amazing job performing this story; he made me love it even more than I did when I read it with my eyes.

Great age-gap story!
