Summary

***Academy Reverse Harem***

Magic exists. I know - it’s in my blood.

Unfortunately, not all people from magical bloodlines have powers, and at 22, I’m several years past the age they usually appear. So I’ve resigned myself to a boring, magic-less life.

Then something strange happens....

I get stuck in the middle of a bar fight, and instead of just punching the guy back, I blow a hole in the wall.

So...I guess I do have powers. But they’re unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. This shit is definitely not normal.

And it seems the magical authorities agree, because they give me a choice: either I go to school to learn to control my crazy new magic, or they’ll take it away. Permanently.

Now, if I can just survive the bitchy, mean girls determined to take me down a peg; the mysterious attacks on students; the three hot-as-hell guys who don’t seem turned off by my prickly exterior; and the professor who makes me long for detention, maybe I’ll get out of here in one piece.

Wouldn’t bet on it though.

Welcome to the Academy of Unpredictable Magic.

Spark is the first book in the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series, a medium-burn reverse harem story intended for ages 18 plus, featuring a badass chick and the four sexy men who fall in love with her.

Spark

This is a reverse harem, prn: magic book. A young girl who comes into her powers later than normal, and is forced to attend the academy to keep them. There are a few inconsistencies and jumps throughout the story that are hard to overlook but for the most part the story is pretty good, and isn't completely focused on the R.H.

I love Sarah Puckett's narrations, and have listed to almost all of her audio performances, I have yet to find one I didn't like. She brings the characters out and brings the book a step above what it would have been without the audio.

Reviewed for Audiobook Obsession

Spark is one of those stories where from the beginning you can’t help but love the heroine. She is feisty, family oriented, loyal to a fault, but has a bad girl lurking underneath. Deep down though you know she is disappointed when her sister shows signs of something she doesn’t have, till one day all heck breaks loose and her life changes forever.
I can’t wait to see where this story leads next, reverse harems are such fun and this one I think will be scrumptious.
Sarah Puckett did an amazing job narrating with all the characters in this story.

Entertaining with just the right amount of drama

It is becoming apparent that I’m a Sarah Puckett fanatic. As expected, she performed this narration flawlessly.

I enjoyed the drama in this book. From the student/teacher relationship (which didn’t start out as such) to the mean girls picking on the new girl, to the relationship that develops between Elliot and the three guys. It was overall an entertaining listen.

Action, adventure and 4 hot guys!!

What a way to start a story! I loved all of it. The mystery, action and all the delicious romantic tension. A beautifully developed world and rich characters round out a fantastic book. I can't wait for more of this series.

Sarah is just plain fantastic. I adore her narration and drink up everything of hers I can get my hands on! She's just that good! ;-)

Mixed feelings, mostly positive though

I have mixed feelings about this book. Overall I like it, but there's problems.

For starters, the timeline is a little confusing. Elliot is 22, Madeline is 18 and their mum died 4 years ago. So Elliot started looking after her sister at age 18, when her sister was 14. The part that's confusing is that Elliot talks about how she reads to her sister before bed, but now it's Jane Austen instead of Loony Toons. What 14 year old has her 18 year old guardian read Loony Toons to her before bed? I'd understand if she had been younger, but 14 seems a bit old for that.

There's also a few timeskips that seem unnecessary. After about two meetings with three of the guys there's a skip where a lot of the developing friendship is glossed over to them all suddenly being super close and Elliot moving in with them. I also wish there were more scenes about Eliot's friendship with Raoul. Their first meeting is shown, and you can tell they get along, but there's not much after that which (without spoiling) kind of makes what happens later less emotional.

I'd have liked to hear about Eliot's second ability as it appeared rather than hearing about it like "oh I have a second ability now, here's how it happened..." The whole book has a habit of telling instead of showing. We get told conversations happen between characters, we get told about events, but we don't often see them happen. "We've been running together through the woods every morning" Why is this the first we hear of this?!

Generally, Elliot is a frustrating character. She insists on being cold to people because they all leave etc. Standard tragic past reaction. She's so ignorant of the magical world even though she was a strong part of it when her mother was alive until Elliot was 18. It's only been 4 years since she's been out of touch, she should know more than this!

But mostly what I don't get is why Elliot insists on getting involved in the student attacks. She says that Roman needs her help, but I don't get how she's going to help. She sticks her nose into this for literally no reason. She feels more justified in doing things after her woods phone-call with her sister. That's when I get on board with her actions.

Suddenly everything feels more justified and realistic. I can see why Roman needs her, and the guys', help after they're late to the assembly. The final battle is well-written and exciting.

Unfortunately it feels very Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Chamber of Secrets by the end. With the magical object being kept at a school, threats of the school closure after student attacks etc. It's hard to get that comparison out of my head. But I still enjoyed it, so that's a big plus. I'll likely check out the next book in the series too.

Hot Paranormal Romantic Mystery

The entire story had me captivated from start to finish. It had some elements of Reverse Harem but the romantic moments weren't the main part of the story. I loved the paranormal aspects. The author does an amazing job writing characters that keep you intrigued and a plot that actually goes somewhere.

Loved the narration, the steamy bits were so much hotter and there was excellent differentiation between characters. Another great performance by Sarah Puckett <3.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Amazing Academy Paranormal RH

Loved Elliot's story. Great world and character building. Hot to start, the slower burn. Unpredictable magic, taboo hot for teacher, and typical school drama.

I love the story but the narrator ruins the story

I've already read the book but wanted to have the audio book too, since I love the story so much.
Unfortunately I can't stand the narrator's voice/tone/style. To me it honestly feels like the narrator can't be bothered to try - like she doesn't really want to be doing this.

Regardless, the story is easy and fun. The characters are likable, and I really adore that the MC is in her 22's (versus all the 15-18 year olds). The world-building is interesting; I want to see more from this world in the future!

The most unlikable main character ever.

The main character is an idiot. Not in a ditsy way. She goes against all sound logic just to be contrary. She's terrible to perfect strangers with no provocation. It would take a twist of fate, magical insta-lust, and some of that "I can see deeply into your soul and tell exactly who you are just by staring" nonsense to make anyone want to date this girl or even just be her friend. and that's exactly what happens.

She is the cliched "I have been hurt so I'm going to take it out on anyone who comes into contact with me" character. She is the early 20's cliche of constantly insisting that she is an adult and behaves maturely and better than those around her. She also complains about the mean girls at school being rude but is a hypocrite because she treats complete strangers like dirt too.

Sadie Moss is a good writer and keeps the story well paced and interesting, but her characters are lazily shaped. This plot is also ridiculously similar to ACADEMY OF ASSASSINS which is also an RH. The mystery is the exact same. It is also similar to her own story BOUND BY MAGIC in that the main character finds out later in life than most that she has magic. Her writing skill does make for an entertaining read especially if you don't roll your eyes to hard at the MC's "prickly" behavior.

Great academy story!

Sadie Moss is a new author to me.. and I am honestly a little embarrassed about that because this book was so fantastic. I was lucky enough to win a copy of the audiobook from the author on facebook. And she gained a fan with me. I have already purchased Bound by Magic which is an audiobook of hers. I am super excited to have found a new author.

This book we have a girl bartender, Elliot. She grew up with extremely magical parents but she herself has no power.. or so she thought. This book is about Elliot going to a magical academy full of others just like her. She is learning who she is and who she wants to be. We also have four amazing guys, each with their own quirks. I can't wait to get to know them more in the next book.

Sarah Puckett did a very good job bringing these characters to life. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Elliot really came to life

Elliot grew up in the magical world without magic of her own. At 22 she is well past the age of her magic sparking, so when she accidentally gets in the way of an errant punch during a bar fight and her magic arrives in a spectacular fashion no one is more surprised than Elliot. Her powers didn't arrive at the normal age and that is just the beginning. She has unpredictable magic and is quickly whisked away to an Academy to learn how to safely control her magic. A school full of magic users with unpredictable magic, dangers, and secrets of its own. What could possibly go wrong?

There's no doubt, this story entertained me despite my issues with the main character. I love the academy setting. I love magic, although there's not as much magic throughout the book as I expected there to be. I love RH. Elliot could have been an awesome character. She was a great big sister. She was smart and capable. She was physically tough but weak emotionally. I hate the female who is too afraid to feel. Sleeping with a guy then running off is a coward's move. Refusing to talk to the guy(s) is immature. I want more from the female. I also want more of a connection between Elliot and 3 of her 4 men. You could feel the heat between her and Roman but she seemed more a roommate with her roommates than anything else. Don't misunderstand, I really like the guys; I just didn't feel any sexual tension. I'm hoping for more in the future.

The story itself didn't contain any major surprises but held my interest until the end. The concept was solid and there were enough surprises along the way to leave me looking forward to more. I listened to this on audio and honestly believe that it made it more entertaining than if I had read the book. Sarah Puckett did a fabulous job bringing Eliott to life. She captured her sass and strength, as well as her weaknesses. #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

Elliot is jaded by what life has thrown at her. She must come to terms with her unpredictable magic, her growing attraction to 4 guys and being away from her sister. This first book was enjoyable

Loved this

Elliot doesn’t know how to love anyone but her sister due to her past. She believes her magic will never come and she will live life as a normal human. When powers spark in a big way and she is forced to go to school will she find her own community and a way to heal. I absolutely fell in love with Elliot and the academy she gets sent to and can not wait more from the series. Not only does it have a great story that will keep you listening Sarah Pucket does such a great job on the narration for this.
