Fantastic

Came across the author by accident via a tweet as we were stuck in the same christmas traffic jam. Book provides a very good introduction to space, time and all that other stuff you think you know about when actually you don't. Certainly made the long work journeys alot more enjoyable than Radio X!!!

To quench, or to burp...

...that is the question. This book is just right type of book if you have just started with astrophysics. it is just right type of book if you are just curious or if you just want to know more. In either case, just pick up this book or I will just pull your arm off. Just kidding, but still pick up this book.

Delightful, Inspiring and Insightful

(Disclaimer: Dr Becky and I are friends and colleagues) 'Space: 10 things you need to know' is an excellent short work which delivers insightful points on our knowledge of the universe in an easily digestible and understandable way. Dr Becky perfectly encapsulates what it takes to be a science educator, and her writing and performance here got me excited to learn about things that I already knew from my own research and education. Inbetween the amazing science, Dr Becky brings an energy of pure excitement about the universe at large that is infectious and inspiring. A must listen for fans of pop science and an excellent example of good sci-comm practice for those of us looking for inspiration.

Becky Smethurst. What a star.

I follow Becky on you tube. She helps me understand many subjects in astronomy that I have struggled with. As soon as I knew of this audio book I purchased it. I've loved listening. Thank you Becky

Excellent accessible overview of astronomy

I came across this book from following the author’s YouTube channel. Similar to those videos, Dr Smethurst’s passion for astronomy makes this book highly engaging and informative. I also enjoy that she frequently goes beyond a simple recitation of a scientific principle by showing how the individual observations leading to that principle were first discovered and subsequently integrated into a cohesive theory. The book is very accessible to a general population audience. It is not an exhaustive, comprehensive take on the topic like a textbook might be, but instead focused on a few important ideas such as dark matter, or the relationship between super massive black holes and galaxies. Each chapter covers a different idea. Concepts are explained in an understandable way with relatable metaphors/examples that help explain the underlying idea. My only criticism is that I wish it were longer — it is engaging enough that I found myself wanting to learn more about the topic being discussed in each chapter, or to have more chapters/concepts to learn about; e.g. the hypothesized planet 9 or dark energy. Perhaps there will be a sequel.

I love Dr Becky!

I've been a subscriber to her YouTube channel for ages. Probably since very near the beginning. And I have always enjoyed her excellent explanations of astronomy and hearing her take on current astronomical events and discoveries. This book feels like a continuation of that excellent work.

Entertaining Introduction to Space Science

This may not be as deep or as detailed as some would like but it's a good introduction to the subject matter. This is Dr. Smethurst's first performance for an audiobook and she sometimes went a bit too fast. I do have one major issue with her facts. I think we no longer credit Franklin for "discovering" electricity..

Wonderful and Informative!

Dr. Becky has an amazing way of communicating her passion. This book is a great way to introduce yourself AND others into the life of Astronomy. By tackling the most common questions asked about the cosmos, Dr. Becky illustrates the scales of space with intuitive visualizations; such as the viewing a patch of space the size of a thumbnail at arms length, the distances between stars systems, probability of other intelligent life in the cosmos and much more! Her explanations are very easy to comprehend which is most helpful into getting your head around the immense scales the universe. She details the ideas that physicists came up with to solve some of the most daunting tasks of the enigmas of space and presents the ones still unsolved. This book is enthralling and direct in giving you what you need to know without encumbering you with intellectual premise and can easily be read in a day! There is no excuse not to have this in your collection!
