About this listen

Love kills kingdoms …

Back in Grim’s castle on Nightshade, Isla is reeling in the wake of a brutal battle and the devastating truths it exposed. Her future—and the fate of the world—now hinge on a heart split in two.

Past Isla, who fell in love with the ruler of Nightshade, fights to resist feelings she considers treasonous. The Isla of the present, who has seen the ruin her powers can cause, will do anything to save Lightlark and its king.

As the line between enemy and friend is tested, Isla is more desperate than ever to understand the oracle’s final prophecy and change her heartrending fate. But a storm is coming. And with it, a long-buried evil greater than anything the realms have faced before.

With the clock ticking on her destiny and the survival of two warring kingdoms hinging on her own shattered heart, Isla Crown will either save the world—or destroy it.

After finishing the Throne of Glass series, I wanted something easy to follow while still staying within the fantasy genre. Lightlark felt like a natural pick, especially with its love triangle element—something I personally enjoy, even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

From the start, I found myself drawn to Grim as the better match for Isla. Unlike Oro, who seems to love an idealized version of Isla, Grim embraces both her strengths and flaws. A true relationship requires accepting the whole person, and that’s where Oro’s love feels somewhat conditional. While there’s clear chemistry, Oro’s perception of Isla leans toward only seeing the “good,” which makes it harder to believe in a lasting relationship between them.

That being said, while I enjoyed the direction of the story, I did feel the plot was a bit thin. The foundation is there, but the next book really needs to expand on it to keep the momentum going. Without a stronger storyline, it risks feeling unfulfilling.

The last 30% of the book also had some chapters that didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The dynamic between Isla and Oro in those moments felt a little shallow, and I wish we had seen more depth—especially regarding why Isla is struggling to choose between the two love interests. There was an opportunity to explore Oro’s determination and what he’s willing to do to keep Isla, but it fell short. Hopefully, the sequel will dive deeper into this and bring more complexity to their relationships.

While this wasn’t my favorite installment compared to the previous books, I still enjoyed aspects of it and am curious to see where it goes next. If the plot strengthens and the love triangle becomes more layered, it has the potential to be a great continuation.

A love triangle with potential, but a plot that needs more depth.

I don't know what I'm more annoyed about - the fact I thought this was a trilogy or the fact it isn't a trilogy.

I'll preface the following saying that I'm still giving the book 4 stars because despite the frustrations I wanted to keep reading and wanted to see what happened. I liked the concept, the overall plot. I even liked the love triangle to begin with.

To begin with.

Now, after three books, it just feels like a shoe-horned tragedy. Isla needs to choose and grow up. Oro needs to find someone who deserves him. Isla is obviously matched to Grim. He is the one that matches her, warts and all.

Isla's lack of growth is annoying as. Everytime I thought she was getting somewhere, she dug her heels in and learnt nothing. Then, magically, everything comes together for her but it seemed more convenient than truly acquired skill. A little communication and a little less selfishness would have seen her win faster.

The ending... wow. That sooo could have been good. Another chapter or two and the entire story could have been wrapped up. Instead, the final battle felt rushed and the story cuts off on a cliffhanger that left me feeling flat. I do not want another whole book. I just wanted an ending. A proper one.

Seemed a little slower than the other two books but still really enjoyable. I wish there was more in this book personally though.

Loved it!

I’m hoping there is a 4th on its way… will be terribly disappointed in this series if there isn’t another book with a better ending than this.

Erm. what… I wanted so much more from the ending of this book.
