About this listen
'Fiercely honest and comforting' Irish Independent
'The book every single woman needs' Rebecca Reid
Around 40 per cent of UK adults are single at any one time. Far from being a transitional state between relationships, singledom can offer freedom, self-discovery and self-determination. At the same time, there are challenges, from social to economic. How do you handle being ill if you are alone? Who do you call if you're stranded out late at night? If you don't find the right person to have a baby with, should you become a parent alone?
In Single, Nicola explores being un-partnered in a world designed for couples, and how to find the joy in the life that you are already living. If you are newly single, long-term single, avowedly single, reluctantly so, considering leaving your current relationship or just wondering what to say to your aunt next time she asks if you'll ever get married - this book is for you.

Critic reviews
A joyous read
Fiercely honest and comforting
Nicola manages to do a rare thing: she shows compassion for single people without pitying them. She celebrates their narrative while also understanding that they might change how they feel about it from one month to the next. And she helps them to search for connection in many different places, as well as to understand themselves better. I wish The Single Supplement existed when I was single. (Natasha Lunn)
'Nicola is a warm and generous writer with a singular voice - she has built a large, loyal following and brought balance, calm and compassion to the noisy online world.' (Daisy Buchanan)
'I love Nicola Slawson's writing - she's so perceptive about life and love, and I don't think I'm the only Old Married who adores The Single Supplement. She has a rare talent for finding the story in vague trends, and is not afraid to bring a vulnerable, personal angle to her writing. I can't wait to read her book!' (– Katherine May, author of)
A very well researched collection of interviews makes an enjoyable read!

Yes, there are downsides to being single. There are also downsides to relationships and marriages. I genuinely believe that if you're consistently focusing on the negatives, you'll find more of them. This book felt more as if the author was trying to convince you you'll be fine rather than celebrating your choices.
The audio was confusing with no clear definition between chapters and headings. One sentence often rolled into a new title and it takes a while to make sense. You can also hear the narrator breathing continually, which I've never experienced before. The tone of voice is almost sympathetic, as if she wants to empathise with you about your struggles being single. There was so little joy in this book for me.
Maybe for someone who struggles with being single, this could be a beneficial 'how-to' style book. For those confident in navigating life single and proud of being so, I don't think it will be useful.
