Not a bad plot line - arranged marriage which becomes love through mutual physical attraction and a growing trust which develops slowly and unexpectedly (for the MCs, not the listener). Plenty of the expected twists caused by various devices including rumours about infidelity (not between the MCs); kidnap plots involving mistaken identity; the usual violent rescue missions; unexpected pregnancy and lots of sneaky escapes which just shouldn't have been possible (the security in a lot of these mob tales is laughable).

The majority of the characters are pretty well drawn and I really liked Bianca (our heroine). She's loyal, inventive and feisty. She's also a realist and fully aware of the consequences of her actions. She makes a refreshing change! Alexei is the standard complicated fraught grey hero, weighed down with responsibility and torn about priorities. He’s also knocked sideways by the realisation that he's fallen in love with the woman he had to marry in order to try and settle a score. The chemistry between the two is apparent even before Bianca realises who Alexei is. His respectful approach to Bianca, especially when she throws herself at him, was well handled and I could almost feel his frustration about the situations he's forced to deal with.

If you're put off by graphic violence, don't worry - there isn't much and it's over quickly. As you might expect, it's completely unrealistic in that no-one you might really care about dies (with the exception of one poor almost bystander who isn't even named). If you like something spicy, you'll have to wait a while for this to develop but when it does, it's hot, steamy, not grossly explicit but detailed enough to have left me tingling! For me this was probably 3.5/5 on the 🌶️ scale. You won't find anything kinky or degrading and there's none of the “Daddy”/”Sir” stuff we sometimes get in novels of this type.

The narration was excellent - both Ms Thatcher and Mr Cassidy adopt voices which suit the characters perfectly. I always prefer true duet style narration, rather than those in which one narrator has to adopt the voices of all the people who speak in a particular chapter and this one was very well done. Unfortunately,the same quality isn't present in respect of the overall production. There are numerous points in the narrative when it stops for so long that I had to ask Alexa to restart it, only to find that a number of words are completely missing. They don't appear even when rewinding it. It marred my enjoyment of the story.

This was reduced in a monthly sale but I’d have happily used a full credit on it. I liked it so much that I’ve put the rest of the series into my (very long) wish list and will definitely snap them up if they go on sale in the future. Overall, a very enjoyable start to a series but without a cliffhanger that might make you have to carry on. Happy listener!
