In this gripping fantasy series set in a world where magic is fuelled by pleasure and pain, an obsessive detective infiltrates a brutal gang of dark mages – knowing that one wrong move will get her killed...

'Lush, dangerous, and utterly addictive' Lauryn Hamilton Murray, author of Heir of Storms

'An immersive, spellbinding story that had me feverishly turning pages late into the night.' Hannah Whitten, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Foxglove King

----------------

Two decades ago, the Bloodmoons ruthlessly murdered Saffron's parents. Hellbent on revenge, she lied her way into the elite Silvercloak Academy of detectives with a single goal: find a way to bring the Bloodmoons to justice.

But on the eve of her graduation, her deception is exposed, and she's given only one option: go undercover and tear the Bloodmoons down from the inside.

Descending into a world where pleasure and pain are the most powerful currencies, Saff must commit some truly heinous deeds to keep her cover - and her life. Not only are there rival gangs and sinister smuggling rings to contend with, there's also her growing feelings for the kingpin's tortured son, and curious prophecy foretelling his death at Saff's hand.

With each day testing her loyalties further, Saff's web of lies becomes harder to spin.

And when one false step could destroy everything and everyone she's ever loved...the mage who dedicated her life to vengeance might just have to die for it.

Critic reviews

An absolute masterpiece – I’ve never read a fantasy like it
Lovely, lush, intricate and thoughtful. Reminds me of a favourite writer from childhood, and I do not make Diana Wynne Jones comparisons lightly!
With an immersive world, compellingly flawed characters, and a taut exploration of what it means to be moral in an uncaring world, L.K. Steven gives us a dazzling (and frequently sizzling) new fantasy in SILVERCLOAK. Read it and join me in asking . . . how long until book two?
This will be your next fantasy obsession. Intricate world building, expertly woven with a thoroughly unique magic system, Silvercloak propels you through twists and turns with an ending you will not see coming
One of the best fantasies I’ve ever read
In this sexy, beguiling, and wholly intoxicating novel, pleasure and pain commingle in a fantasy that crackles with vibrant and alluring energy. I slid into the world of Silvercloak with the ease of a breath, but leaving it is as impossible as removing one’s limb.
Lush, dangerous and utterly addictive
A cut-throat tale, with searing enemies-to-lovers and magical espionage, set in an exquisitely detailed world

Really enjoyed this book, the plot was clever, gripping & tense ....... beautifully written, deep complex characters. I will look forward to book 2

Clever, tense, exciting

I like the magic system and the way no one has endless power, but I wasn't fully sold on the bond of the characters. I am not sure if that's the book or the narrators doing; I thought she was good but not brilliant. There were certain voices to me that sounded quite womanly but turned out to be male characters and this could take me out of the story.

I have always struggled with time manipulation even if it is done reasonably cleverly. The story overall is enjoyable and I'm intrigued to see where it goes, but I'm not sold on the characters just yet. I'm hoping the next book picks up the pace slightly better.

Intriguing Concept

This is how the mafia world and magic are combined. Dark fantasy, a special magical world, broken people, magic wands, romance and intrigue 4, 5⭐️. All the twists at the end raised my reading experience to almost five stars...

Oh wow!

This book had me hooked from the very first page! The magic system is so unique and seriously cool. I couldn’t get enough of it.

What truly stood out, were the relationships. The emotional complexity and moral conflicts between characters made everything feel grounded and real, even in a world full of magic.

Laura’s writing flows effortlessly off the page, vivid, immersive, and full of heart. Silvercloak is another incredible story from her, and I already know I’ll be rereading it while I wait (impatiently!) for the sequel.

If you love morally grey characters, fresh magic systems, and immersive storytelling, this one’s for you.

The characters

This had the potential to be amazing but I did have some issues with it. The FMC is complex and at times extremely annoying. I love the diversity of the characters and the idea that magic can be refilled by pain or pleasure. I also loved the wolf. But, there are just a few too many ridiculous decisions that the MMC & FMC make. Honestly, the last part of the book is just so frustrating. I almost gave up. But the narrator is great.
