Magdalena McCarthy goes to a restaurant ISO a pretend boyfriend to take with her to meet her family for her birthday. But she chooses the wrong guy(or should I say thankfully chooses the wrong one). Rook is intrigued by a women who has the gall to sit down with him and lays out what she has planned for her fake boyfriend to help her deceive her meddling family at an upcoming birthday party. What a weird party it is especially when Rook and Dally(his nickname for her) start on a thrilling ride to decipher who is trying to get at Dally and why?
So much deception and wholly cow twists and turns in this book had me on the edge of my seat and unable to put it down until the wee hours before work the next day!
Thomas is perfection in the role of Rook, the sexy hit man who becomes Dally’s saviour. He really only wants to be left alone in his recent retirement. In fact when they are first forced off the road he doesn’t know if the men are after him or Dally? But it quickly became apparent that she’s the one with a target on her hard. Who would have thought up this awesome twisted storyline but L. Ann her books always have me with a hung open mouth or shocked eyes whenever I have the chance to read/hear one of her books.
Elise Hoffman is new to me. She was compelling as the sweet Magdalena. Showing us her insecurities with her family’s treatment of her. 😳 but after she is kidnapped she really starts to shine when she picks herself up and with the help of her unlikely defender, Rook, really shows just how strong she can be.
Amazing audiobook that hopefully turns into a fabulous series because I really need to know Rook’s brothers more!

The characters are well developed and the story actually starts out relatively innocuous. Magdalena wants to pre-empt her mother's efforts and hires a stranger to pose as her boyfriend for the duration of the visit to her parents.
Little does she know that the decision to hire Rook will likely save her life.
The story is unexpected, suspenseful with some not-so-nice secondary characters, but all the more intense main protagonists. Magdalena is sweet and sympathetic. Rook is more of a bad boy and despite his past, I grew to love him more and more because he is on Magdalena's side.
The story captivated me from the beginning and it was exciting throughout and romantic in between, but the ending took me completely by surprise - it was really well done!
Thomas Locklear and Elise Hoffman were a perfect match for the audiobook. They are both masters of their craft and they brought the story to life with all the characters, their actions, their states of mind and the sparkling chemistry that exists between Rook and Magdalena.

The mother blames her daughter for being born, claiming she almost died giving birth to her. Which kind of woman is she? The awful way she treated Magdalena was disgusting. Especially since she herself was living a lie all along.
In comparison to her mother, Frazer is even more despicable. Seeing a brother do what he did to his sister is heartbreaking and appalling.
When I read what they were doing to her while she was with Tomek Alexeyov, tears flowed down my cheeks. The things he does to women are so egregious, I cannot believe he got off so lightly. He was lucky Rook kept his promise to his dad.
Rook was right when he told Dolly that her brother didn't deserve her tears. In the absence of Rook's protection, I cannot imagine the horror she would have endured.
There was a shocking revelation at the end of the story, but it helped to explain a great deal.
Despite its dark elements, this story was thoroughly engrossing. Your attention will be captivated from the first page to the last.

Magdalena a sweet girl looking to stop her mothers efforts in finding her a husband, hires Rook to be the perfect boyfriend. Little does she know how much that decision will change her life forever.
These two characters are thrown together in a highly intense situation that has you on the edge of your seat and listening til late in order to get all the answers. Answers you are certain that you couldn’t imagine!!
I highly recommend this read !! It’s fun, full of action and also a bit of steam is added to round it out as the ultimate romance read.
I’m keeping my eyes pealed for the next story I’m hoping for more!!
The two narrating this were a match made for audio. Their voices just complemented each other and I found myself getting lost in the story because of the excellent performance. A must listen.
