About this listen

A Chronicles of St Mary's short story that is sure to entertain. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Question: What sort of idiot installs his mistress in his wife's house? Especially when that mistress is Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, Queen of Egypt and the most notorious woman of her time?

Answer: Julius Caesar—poised to become King of Rome. Or as good as.

Question: At this potentially sensitive point in your political manoeuvrings, who are the last people you'd want crashing through the door, observing, recording, documenting ...?

I think we all know the answer to that one.

Roman Holiday—an epic, stand alone tale set in Ancient Rome, 44 BC, featuring, in no particular order: an attempted murder, stampeding bullocks, Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, a bowl of poisonous snakes, a smallish riot, Julius Caesar and Mr Markham's wayward bosoms.

A deserving addition to the St Mary's chronicles and more fun in The Roman Empire. A small fix for the withdrawals of time.

Where does Roman Holiday rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Fascinating take on Roman history , told with a humorous touch, highly improbable but quite believable in a weird way

What other book might you compare Roman Holiday to, and why?

One damned thing after another, St Mary's Chronicles first book. Have listened to it repeatedly, and still enjoyed the humour and descriptive writing. Beautifully read, too.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

So many they change every time Ilisten to it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but not really possible as is such a long varied story, really good value for money. I have become a big fan of Jodie Taylor novels.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for her next book, also loved the Nothing girl.

Excellent like all the St Mary's Chronicles books.

This short, stand alone story feels like it should be part of a bigger story. However it is a good yarn and makes for a short listen in between the other St Mary’s tales. Beautifully narrated as ever by Zara Ramm.

A cheaper or two of a bigger book

I like these smaller instalments. This is said to fit between the third and fourth books in the series, but that is not vital. It only takes about an hour to read so is ideal for train journeys and the like.

Good things in small packages

amusing short story
poor Mr Markham getting into scrapes and trouble again, but this time he does save the day somewhat. He seems to be one of the funniest people to have around at any time in history
