About this listen

I never planned on sleeping with him. Nor did I intend to make him my enemy. I only went into the bar to scope out my competition–him. The scorching hot night that followed was a mutually pleasurable accident. Of course I knew we were in the running for the same position.

It’s not my fault he didn’t know who I was.

Gathering intel is my specialty.

Maybe if he were better at it, he would have gotten the job instead of me.

I tried my hardest to resist our chemistry, but he was too damn hot.

Too charming. Too funny. Too masculine.

And he smelled so freaking good.

My hormones took over.

Now we're working together on the Redleg Security intelligence team. Every day. High stress. Close quarters. Sexual chemistry off the charts.

But he hates me.

The thing is… he should hate me. I treated him like a pawn.

But he’s a real man with dreams, passion, and pain.

And I’ve never wanted someone as much as I want him.

But it’s too late for us.

I made us rivals when we could have been so much more.

Note: Rival Hero is a bodyguard romantic suspense story with rom-com vibes. It features a strong heroine who's a former CIA intelligence officer and a swoony former Army Ranger hero who will make you laugh one minute and swoon the next. There's action and all the feels, along with a healthy dose of humor and tons of spice. There is an HEA, no cheating, and no "other woman" drama. Content warnings are available on the author's website.

Tropes: One night stand to office rivals to lovers, good boy goes bad, and forced proximity.

Listening Order: Rival Hero is Book 4 in the Redleg Security Series. Each of the first four books in this series features a different couple, including their happily ever after and is a "complete story" with no cliffhangers. However, the series is best enjoyed in order to avoid suspense-related plot spoilers. Each book starts right where the prior book ends. If you do not wish to listen to them all, then you can listen as a stand-alone.

This book is brilliant. There’s so much humour and snark. It lightens the intense storyline perfectly. With well written characters it’s a joy to listen to. The performance is amazing.

Jason Clarke as Klein was great the perfect amount of sweet and dominant, with that bit of Klein's OMG what is happening right now??
Erin Mallon as Mia perfection her timing was perfect. Her inner pimp was hilarious, I loved reading it in the book and having Erin bring her to life was even better!
These two had me laughing, shaking my head and holding my breath. This is an audiobook you'll want to listen to again and again.

Narration style: dual
Sp!ce level: 4.5
Feels: 🥹😭😭🫠…😭 (it really got me, can you tell? haha)

This was a book of firsts for me! My first romantic suspense, and my first of this author/series. Definitely not my last on either front! Whilst this is technically the fourth book in a series - it can definitely be read as a standalone. But if you plan to read them all, I recommend doing it in order as you will get spoilers for the previous books by sheer fact of knowing who is alive (is the impression I got)

It's a great blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense, laughs, tears & steamy moments. Despite the fact that there's lots of laugh out loud moments, the book deals with some heavy topics that are handled with total care & compassion. The subject was a little close to home for me, so it probably got to me more than it would most people but it was so beautifully done.

There were twists and turns to keep me guessing and I was HOOKED the whole way through. The character development is really key, and done really well.

Also, I don’t know if Tomer got a book of his own already or if he will get one in future - but I would kill for him to get one haha

As for the narration? These two can do no wrong I feel like! They are both very talented actors and portray all the right kinds of emotions and have great comedic timing. One of the things I struggle with the most with dual narration is a man doing a ‘lady voice’ but because they have a naturally deeper voice it can be grating or odd, but Jason’s is definitely one of the best I have heard - he is able to pitch and smooth his voice in a way that sounds great!

This is what you would get if a romance novel had

This was so intense.
There were so many emotions happening during this book. This was another intense adventure for Redleg Security.
This was full of adventures, frustration, anxiety, hurt, lust, new friendships, forgiveness, hope and love.
The tension and chemistry between Klein and Mia is so intense. I love how their dynamic at the office and in the bedroom change immensely throughout the book.
There’s plenty of snark and banter, adventure, edge of your seat assignments, secrets, and family.

Jason Clarke & Erin Mallon both did such a phenomenal job bringing these characters to life.

Intense and full of adventure!

Rival Hero is narrated by the rockstar team of Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon. Their performances brought the quirky characters to life, and Jackie Walker's writing adapts really well to audio with the extra commentary for the reader. I'm sure that I liked the story more because I listened to the audiobook.

Rival Hero could be read as a stand alone as it starts with Mia and Cal meeting for the first time, and it progresses through their relationship challenges. Characters from previous books play a significant part in this book, so it's better to read in series, but not required. I've personally listened to 2 of the 3 earlier books. There were short cameos from what I assume are somewhat related series, but I haven't read those personally. The first book in this series was my first book by Jackie Walker. There is some very blunt language and more explicit scenes than the average romance, but I did like the action that goes along with the romantic suspense storyline.

I received a copy of this book at my request, and the opinions here are my own.

Excellent narration
