Self-Directed Brain Change is based on a key emerging insight from neuroscience: that to keep our ancestors alive, the human brain evolved to stick to negative experiences like Velcro and shrug off the positive ones like Teflon. The good news, teaches Rick Hanson, is that we can retrain our neural structure out of "sheer survival" mode and into one of greater well-being, mental clarity, and moment-to-moment appreciation.

Unless this anger is addressed, it is impossible to overcome. This book urges listeners to practice mindfulness - deliberately allowing physical sensations and emotions to surface so they can be examined and released.

Story
Legions of self-help authors rightly urge personal development as the key to happiness, but they typically fail to focus on its most important objective: hardiness. Though that which doesn't kill us can make us stronger, as Nietzsche tells us, few authors today offer any insight into just how to springboard from adversity to strength. It doesn't just happen automatically, and it takes practice. New scientific research suggests that resilience isn't something with which only a fortunate few of us have been born, but rather something we can all take specific action to develop.

Definitely warrants a second and third listening. Having said that, I found it easy to listen to with straight forward language, and without a rehashing of what might be considered obvious in the field of resilience. A refreshing book.

Life changing insights
Never read a self-development book which offers such a balanced take on life. Other books I read either try to pump you up to do more of A, or less of B. That never works for me in the long term. Information is well structured in a way that is easy to understand and then recall at a later point. No overkill of 15-points lists. The author’s voice is soft and calming, very helpful to take in all the insights. Altogether, a very kind, thoughtful and humane prescription of how you can make sense of what’s going on in your life and how to arrange the pieces of the puzzle in a way that makes you happier and healthier. Chapeau to Rick Hanson!
