I had actually read The Frighteners several times before realising that these books were also 'out there'. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available on Kindle and my eyesight doesn't let me read 'ordinary' books so I had to rely on the audio version. Well, thank god for this narrator! He is absolutely perfect for the story, which is proper edge-of-the-seat stuff, and coming from a different angle than we see usually. Love the sense of humour in here - the slight absurdist humour that appears out of nowhere, as it does no matter how stressed and tense you are. It makes things more realistic. Thoroughly enjoyed this and am happily going to leap into book 2. Really recommended.

Disliked the disregard for animal suffering, also a theme in the second book in this series which caused me to abandon the series altogether

Interesting story, so intertwined I had difficulty following and kept going going back so I didn't miss anything. A good read.

Although the central character and the plot are good (if a little predictable) the book was spoilt by the authors addiction to similes. He sometimes used them to try and inject humour or add horror to an image, but too much and too many. And he usually left a straightforward description in too - maybe for those of us he thinks are too ignorant to understand the simile?
And then there's the repetition. A good edit is needed.
The narrator is good, though initially he was trying to inject humour through his voice, and he tends to add long pauses which makes the book sound disjointed. I don't know if this is poor punctuation or his reading. And he pronounces worried to rhyme with horrid not hurried.

A great well paced thrilling story with engaging and likeable characters. My 'must read' of 2017. Can't wait to read more featuring Matt Hunter and more by the excellent author Peter Laws.
