Summary

Their past is not what they think it is....

Thrown back in time after the spells binding Whitehall School together nearly collapsed, Emily finds herself in the days of Lord Whitehall. But everything she knows about the past is a lie. The Whitehall Commune is in hiding from a great and terrible foe, while some of the legendary founders bicker like children and others call on deadly and untrustworthy entities with agendas of their own.

Desperately seeking a way back to her own time, her mere presence a boon and a curse to established history, Emily is drawn into a conflict against both rogue wizards and a mysterious force intent on exterminating all magicians before the future school can take shape. But as deadly powers converge on the castle, her time is running out...and, deep beneath Old Whitehall, something dark and dangerous is about to be born.

Absolutely brilliant! Couldn’t stop listening!

Would you listen to Past Tense again? Why?

This book is one of my favourites in the series by far! It was so exciting I couldn’t turn it off I lost so much sleep! It was so satisfying & I was gutted when it ended! i wanted to know so much more about the characters from the past and what happened to them but the author tied up their stories quite well in the end.

What other book might you compare Past Tense to, and why?

It’s hard to compare this to any other book as the story was so original with excellent twists and turns.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed every chapter of this book but the ones with lord wolf & Emily creating the spellware for the nexus point wards was very interesting and clever.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Thrown into the past to save the future!

Any additional comments?

This was definitely my favourite book of the series; finding out how Whitehall school was created along with all the twists, turns, political infighting and past magical ability. The monsters from the past are extremely formidable & finding out how the mimic’s were created was really unexpected and cleverly executed.

Frustrating

Dislike how the author handled the main characters approach to the timeline. Sometimes Emily is just frustrating when the answer or action to take seems so obvious or simple but she has the whole “woe is me” attitude, constant fear and trepidation. Emily even came from the modern word and has mentioned the many-worlds theory a dozen times I. The series but can’t come to the conclusion that anything she does is supposed to happen because if it wasn’t it would make her never happen, therefor never letting her go to Whitehall, and never fall into the past in the first place, and never cause whatever it is that she’s internally arguing with herself about. The paradox would prevent her from doing anything that would break her timeline.

If you subscribe the the “every decision that can happen does happen” theory, then anything she did to break her timeline wouldn’t actually be.. her timeline. Her timeline would remain unchanged therefor have no negative consequences on her version of events.

If it wasn’t for the fact that it would ruin layer books, I would have skipped chapter after chapter till Emily got her head out of her ass.

loving the time travel

I'm loving the time travel! Heroes always are fantastic in stories, but what are they like in real life? would you make a deal with the devil if there was no other choice? This book covers all of that and more. Can't wait for the next book.

Best one so far

I don't know if it is the story line or that she is more grown up, but I loved this book. I've listened to it 3xs.

Way cool!

I don't mind saying the obvious: time travel.

Even so, how much more powerful does a person get!? The story is that good, as usual.

Still like the series, but

I still like the series, but this one felt cobbled together. it just wasn't as interesting. And there are still a lot of gaps that don't make any sense.

Inspired and relentless

An unrelenting experience of a book. Nuttall continues to weave an astoundingly complex tapestry of a story. Threading call backs, Easter eggs and intensity into the rich continuity he has created throughout the last nine books. His mastery of character work is enthralling as Emily is thrown into a setting that makes her even more of a fish out water and Nuttall is on point every step of the way making Emily even more compelling, relatable, concientous and pensive. This is easily my favorite adventure thus far.
