Story
After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

When you can talk to ghosts, things are bound to get spirited. The ghosts have been there since before I can remember. When I was a kid, they doted on me, but as I got older, they got more demanding. I’ve spent my whole life seeing and talking to dead people and trying to pretend I’m not, because the living just don’t understand. Nobody wants to be around the freak who claims to see ghosts. Until I go to Mannix Estate.

Story
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Story
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally…and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me - I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t…quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me?

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Summary
It's not easy being the only human at the Community of Species Government - and especially not when you're the rescue case. Two years ago, I was planning to go to college, have a wild time, then settle into a normal life. Instead, I was kidnapped, spent months being a test subject, was in hiding for nearly a year, and then found out that my whole existence is a science experiment conducted by the bad guys. It's definitely time to reassess.
My rescuers at CSG have been awesome...mostly. They gave me a job, a home, and a support network. But the whole demons, vampires, shifters thing is not easy to get used to. Especially when one particular vampire makes me want to take up stake sharpening for a hobby.
The thing is, teenage mentality or not, Andrew is a fierce protector. With the bad guys still on the loose, I need someone like that on my side. Plus, did I mention that he's not hard to look at?
As we race to find my former captor before he can find me, life takes another twist and upends my world all over again. This time, though, I'm ready - after all, I've got an 800-year-old vampire at my back. What could possibly go wrong?

Louisa Masters is brilliant at this genre. The storyline is fluid from Demons Do It Better as well as the characters.
I absolutely loved it as much as the first - Andrew and Noah are such a great fit, especially the snark and humour.
Even ‘The World Of Wangs’ got another mention - so hysterically funny 😆

I don’t like cliffhanger books, but I just figured out I don’t like “happy for now” either.
Cool and twisted story, this really is a series you have to have all. And in order …
The book was good and somewhat interesting, though it felt like it got wrapped up a little too abruptly.

I love visiting this world and all its people. It's so intriguing and well written, it will keep you on the edge of your seat. A modern day human and an 800 year old vampire - hilarity and drama ensues. AND Joel Leslie is a master of accents and innuendo. He grabs the story and takes it into the atmosphere. No one beats Joel Leslie
Well this is a tough one. Usually a book rating is easy for me to place and I rarely need to quantify it with a .5 but for the first time in forever I'm being forced to do so.
Story -3.5
Performance- 5
I'll go with performance first because it really can't be any simpler. Joel Leslie is a book narrating God! The energy and emotions he puts into his performances is just perfect and his delivery of snarky or funny lines is, as always, spot on. Just... maybe don't listen to a sex scene when there's a possibility of others hearing because yeah, that enthusiasm. *cough* Don't ask me why I bring it up. 😳😂
Unfortunately on the story side of things I gotta say I'm not quite as impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's a great story and it had me laughing in places until my stomach hurt. But I've got to be a little harsher than normal because of 2 particular points.
1) I agree with a couple others here who commented that the ending just feels rushed. It really just feels like the author maybe saw the length and said "Oh shoot I gotta stop writing!" or something. I've nothing against HFN's but this one left me feeling completely unsatisfied. Even though we all know it will be an HEA ultimately.
2) My second point is that for the first half of the book Noah just drives me nuts with all his bitching and moaning about the community members around him. I get it, he's been traumatized, barely escaped with his life, everything he knew about himself turned out to be a lie and there's a ton of anger and hurt to work through. But the fact that he has to keep reminding himself not to lash out at people because they did actually save him and truly want him safe and happy just rubs me the wrong way. At least he gets himself under control after a bit.
So in the end, while I enjoyed the story i think it's Joel's performance that saved it for me in the long run. Not sure how I'd have responded if I'd just read the book.

All about Andrew
Joel Leslie is my favorite narrator and Andrew is now a favorite character. He's been brought to life with such vivid flare that I've already cast him with Tom Hiddleston (w/ silver hair of course) and watched the entire book like a film in my head. The team interactions had me roaring with laughter. I'll listen to it again the next time I need a pic me up. Louisa Masters has my deepest (pockets- everything published!) gratitude.
