When COVID-19 struck the UK, the government advised the over-70s to "shield" while the country went into lockdown. One old man went sailing instead. Single-handed and self-isolated, retired journalist John Passmore used the pandemic to achieve an ambition that had eluded him for 60 years. For 3,629 miles, he disappeared into a world of perfect solitude, adventure, and adversity, arriving back 42 days later, short of water and with shredded sails, to find himself celebrated on national radio as the embodiment of everybody’s lockdown dream. Just started to listen .... very intriguing, enjoyable, admirable, praiseworthy and motivating. Cant wait for the next book.

I enjoyed listening to Mr Passmore's adventures and recollections. The narrator was great and fit the writing style perfectly.

The book was a little light and I felt some of the passages were filler. Some extremely questionable dietary advice was unwelcome - for example, it's stated as fact that modern food production does not contain much iron because horses don't plough fields and lost horse shoes would, in the past, provide this "missing" iron.

This is so far from correct I don't know where to start, but there is a whole chapter devoted to this sort of musing.

Still worth a listen, but take some with a pinch of salt.

John’s incredible exploits and adventures sailing are beautifully told. Read with wonder and marvel at the sheer craziness and joy of acting on his passion. Also excellent descriptions of all the sailing terms. A must read for anyone with adventure in their soul.
