Story
I was supposed to be partying with a bunch of celebrities in paradise this week, okay? But then, I made one teeny, tiny error in judgement before leaving New York. Now, I find myself shacked up with my fake boyfriend Beale Goodman, Whispering Key’s most adorable, most enormous, most virginal cinnamon roll - a guy who rescues feral cats, believes in soulmates, and talks about happiness like it’s free for the taking. A guy who nearly convinces me, with every smile and kiss, that it is.

Story
I left my family and tiny Texas hometown 15 years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I'm shocked out of the steady life I've built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco. The thing is: I don't do babies. And I don't do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don't do family.

Story
The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary. A chance to gain some work experience, to have some fun. I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types, or to find purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm. And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude - I’ve never been one to put down roots.

Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Wonderfully suspenseful

Summary
I came to Whispering Key for a job. That was all. To show the world Mason Bloom could be more than a small-town doctor living a medium-sized life.
Private doctor on a swanky island with a posh resort? Check.
But from the moment I set foot on this island, nothing went according to plan.
I didn’t expect to find the resort falling apart. I didn’t expect the people here to be so charming and crazy and welcoming and real. I didn’t expect legends about shipwrecks and buried treasure. And I definitely didn’t expect Fenn Reardon, the island’s incredibly attractive, incredibly infuriating, incredibly male resident tour guide, to become the one person I can’t live without.
Thirty-five’s a bit late for me to realize I'm not straight, though, right? And I have big dreams that won’t fit on Whispering Key, anyway - dreams that do not include tying myself to a tiny island stuck in the past or to a man who refuses to think about the future.
My head’s telling me I have to leave Whispering Key...My heart’s telling me there might be treasure on this island after all.

4.5* of grumpy lovers
Oh my, the new series by May Archer is such fun, with no angst, star crossed slightly grumpy lovers, coming out or rather a realisation, ghosts, buried treasure and a whole cast of wacky and wonderful characters.
I really enjoyed this book and listening to it brought to life, with it’s laugh out loud moments, I think Fenn and Mason were perfect for each other balancing out their insecurities. I can’t wait to find out what the island of Whispering Key has in store for us readers/listeners next.

Awesome
Another great story from May Archer expertly narrated by Michael Dean. This combination are so good at showcasing the emotional aspect of romances, May’s words and Michael’s performance.
I love a gay awakening story and this is everything you could want from that trope, Mason and Fenn are just too cute together and I just want to keep hearing more stories about them.

Fun and light
It takes a few chapters to get interesting since it starts very descriptive and insanely slow, but around chapter 5± the story turns hilarious, sexy, gripping, crazy hot, and with that charming May Archer writes after a few chapters. The characters are adorable and so cute together!!! 🥰
My only issue is the narrator. I have no idea why they keep getting him if he talks like the robotic voice of Google Translate.
When he talks with a normal pronunciation, it's ok, but when he emphasizes the words... His faaaaaaace wheeent even pinkeeeer. Thiiiiiissss haddddd to beeeee the beeeest time eveeeerrrr....

Not bad
It's definitely a cookie-cutter plot with all the expected & overdone contrivances to keep the suspense - so the characters are rather unbelievable. Having said that I've heard a lot worse.
The narration is pretty good - aside from M Dean's pronunciation of Spanish which is laughable. I honestly thought all Americans spoke some limited Spanish.

Fun
Loved it.
Funny and fluffy. Attraction and antagonistism. The setting of a run down pleasure island was perfect with Mayor Big Rafe lording it over his son's and luring a big city doctor to his '5*resort'. There's a whole host of endearing side characters (I loved Beale). And tales of long lost treasure and ghosts.
And the romance was excellent. Fenn's past and Mason's new sexual awareness provided enough friction that the conflict never felt forced.I

Wonderful audio book
Once again, Michael Dean does a great job narrating this book. His different voices for the different characters really brings them all to life and made this book even more interesting than it already is.
I loved the enemies to lovers situation, the snark and back and forth between Fenn and Mason.
I loved how it changed, slowly, into friendship and love. The heat was scorching.
And the ending was absolutely great and opened a lot of possibilities for what's next in the series, and I can't wait

Engaging start to the series!
4.25 Stars Overall
Off Plan is book 1 in the Whispering Key series, although it ties up with Ms. Archer's Love in O'Leary series, it can be read as a standalone.
Dr. Mason Bloom has landed the job of his dreams or so he thought until he landed in Florida and discovered that the Five Star Resort he had been hired to work at, was really a run-down motel on a dwindling community and that the guy who was sent to pick him up from the airport seems determined on pushing every button Mason has, including some he had no clue of before meeting Fenn.
I loved Mason, he was a sweetheart, good-natured, hardworking and determined to make the best of a not so good situation (or at least not so good at first), and while he'd always thought of himself as straight, I appreciated that he wasn't all that fussy over his attraction to Fenn. He fit in the Whispering Key community perfectly and I adored how everyone accepted him with open arms. Fenn, on the other hand, was frustrating as all hell. Ugh, I got his reasons why he didn't want to get involved with a straight man, but really, he was so difficult at times and I wanted to scream at him when he kept Mason at arm's length. It was especially annoying because Fenn and Mason had an amazing connection and their chemistry was off-the-charts, they just fit so well together despite being so different and I kind of wanted more for Mason, because it took Fenn so long to realize what they had.
I'm already looking forward to seeing all the Whispering Key people again and discovering more about them, especially Fenn's cousins, who I suppose will be next in line to tell their stories.
Michael Dean did a great job with the narration, the book is fun and engaging, with just a little angst thrown in and he brought that out with his voice and made me become invested in the story. Recommendable!

Exciting New Series!!!
I'm so excited for this "spin off" from the O'Leary series. I also love that we get a cameo of Cam and Micah.
Fenn and Mason are so adorable together. There was the tension at first, but then the chemistry too. I love the pace of their relationship, it worked for them. I also love the setting of this new series. As trademark May Archer style, there's always the group/family dynamics, the witty banter and the unavoidable laugh out loud moments.
Michael Dean, my favorite narrator. He brought this book to life. Excellent as always. Strongly recommend.

I loved him when introduced in the Love in O’Leary series with Constantine and Micha, but I loved getting to know him and seeing him fall in love with someone he didn’t think he could stand. Conflicted on how to rate this audiobook
For starters, this is an excellent *book.* You really can't go wrong with anything by May Archer. She writes compelling characters and great dialogue.
However, I was conflicted about how to rate the narration. Michael Dean does a great job narrating the MCs and does justice to their dialogue. However, he makes a few atrocious pronunciation decisions--some major mistakes even--that are extremely distracting and disappointing, and borderline insulting in some instances. There's a minor side character who is Cuban and makes wise pronouncements in Spanish throughout the book. Dean made ZERO effort to pronounce the words correctly. Like not doing a perfect accent is whatever, but not even trying to get the letter J or double-Ls correct is just LAZY. (Like isn't this his job? Isn't he being paid to do this?) He also makes every single female character sound like a dumb cartoon caricature rather than, ya know, a person. Like his version of Gloria would definitely fit in better on Bob's Burgers than in the world of this book. There are a few other distracting pronunciations throughout the book, but I don't need to list them all here. I think you get the point.
TLDR: Dean faithfully captures the MCs, but lazily neglects some details.

Did you say, “Treasure?”
After a bit of a jerky start, this story really smoothed out and I was able to enjoy the ride!
Part if the Of problem was that I liked neither MC in the first couple of chapters. Both were *holes and extremely rude to each other. As the story went along, though, grew kinder—not only to each other but to everyone else as well. I was soon cheering them on.
The book was quite funny & Michael Dean’s performance was good (although nowhere near his best). And, Mr. Dean, I’m asking that you PLEASE learn how to pronounce Spanish because you made me cringe in horror whenever you spoke it.
The slow burn and UST these two had was fab. And while there wasn’t a lot of sex, the few scenes were fun.
Snark, enemies to lovers, bi- or demi- awakening, treasure, & portents.
My rec? It’s a fantastic beach read any time of year!

So much fun
This is not for you if you’re bothered by F bombs, but otherwise it’s such a fun and romantic story.

Best fun yet
I got more and more pulled in to this crazy, fun, loving story with every minute. Couldn't wait to hear how it developed and ended. Great characters, superb narration (Thank you AGAIN Michael Dean.) and predictable delightful book. All the crazy denizens of Whispering Key will live in my memory. Hope to find more May Archer work.

Intensely romantic
SPOILER ALERT (kinda). This book has NO HOOK in the first two chapters. You will have to PLOD through the first two chapters to get to the hook where the characters actually begin their journey. But, if you get past those first two chapters, your patience will be richly rewarded.
Further, at some points in the story, it seems Fenn and Mason have too many character flaws (unsure, unambitious, unreasonable insecurities...) but it all works out in the end. What I'm trying to say is that if you just keep going, the story does end well. One more caveat: The requisite lover's misunderstanding(s) that Fenn and Mason have, sometimes seem a bit TOO convoluted and forced (just for the sake of requisite conflict). Yet, that too makes more sense (or at least they're easier to overlook) if you just keep going.
This sounds like a negative review, but I have to say I really enjoyed the story. I recommend this to those who are willing to work for their HEA.
Michael Dean's narration is the best I've heard him do; in other works he's seemed a bit off-character, but he redeemed himself on this one.
